A 100% league record has only been achieved once in the history of British Speedway - by Oxford in 1986.
Could Scunthorpe match that feat in 2007 - there are currently halfway there.
It's the visit to Oxford on Friday, September 7 that Rob Godfrey has identified as the toughest remaining challenge for the Scorpions from the remaining regular league fixtures.
And, of course, given the fact the top four qualify for play-offs, the Scunthorpe could register a 100% record and still not win the league!!
All the best Rob

I saw them at Plymouth earlier in the season and they looked very strong. Do they still have the same team i.e. Woffinden, Auty etc? Forgive my ignorance I've not kept up to date with gradings etc but it seems they did well to get them in on 5/6 gradings when they are obviously better riders than that. Fair play though, they have put together a very good side and they should win the league this year, to go through the card with a 100% record would be impressive though

Mattj,
Yes, it's still the same squad - six of last year's team plus James Cockle sharing the top five places, and Haines & Richardson at reserve.
There's no doubt Scunthorpe had made the most of the grading system (Woffinden on a grade 6 is the steal of the century), but as you said, fair play to them.
I have no doubts they will top the table, but the key for them could be rider availibility come September and October, as they have quite a few PL riders, including Woffinden who rides for Rye House, who are also going to be busy come the end of the season.
There's a chance Scunthorpe could slip up at the end - in which case Plymouth, Oxford, Rye House, etc will be waiting.
All the best Rob

Good point Rob,
Hadn't thought about rider availability etc, which must be difficult for teams in the Conference who use a few PL riders. It is certainly shaping up to be an interesting end to the CL season.
It seems to be a worrying trend (maybe just on the BSF) that teams who use the rules to their advantage are somehow cheating. I know we did it often enough over the years, the main tactic with the current set up of the league is to find riders who can do a lot better than their average suggests surely? OK there are sometimes "dubious" methods to get there but Swindon this year for example have dropped lucky with several of their assets being available on attractive averages, along with Chrnowski (sp?) coming in on a silly figure (though I'm not sure how he got it, not kept in touch over the past few years)

OK, Oxford did win every league match that they rode in 1986, but as you well know, they failed to complete two meetings at home. For that reason, it is possible that Scunthorpe could actually better Oxford's achievement.

In 1986, Oxford won 18 out of 18 completed matches. In 2007, Scunthorpe will, if they do it, win 18 out of 18 matches. So that will match the achiievement Bloody hell, you're nearly as picky as I am ;D ;D All the best Rob

Let it go mate, they will better your record if they do go unbeaten. Picky? Me?

Picky? Me? Yes!! ;D ;D All the best Rob P.S. Could well be the meeting at Oxford on September 7 that decides if Scunthorpe... ahem... MATCHES the record of the 1986 Cheetahs and indeed the 1929 White City (Manchester) side

Well, well, well. Scunthorpe lose 46-43 at Boston, a track where Oxford had won just a week previously. Not only is their 100% record in ruins, but the battle for the CL is on - bring it on!! All the best Rob

Well they might not have a 100% record, but Scunthorpe hope to be going PL. From http://www.speedwayworld.tv: CONFERENCE League club Scunthorpe intend to move up a level next year after another spectacular season of success. The Scorpions have secured back to back Grand Slams having retained the Conference Knockout Cup with an 18-point aggregate win over Plymouth. And they have done it with a team built to include several of the most promising rising stars in the UK, including the likes of Tai Woffinden and Josh Auty. Earlier in the year, the Scorpions management confirmed that they intend to bring Premier League racing to their Normanby Road venue next season, having invested heavily in developing the facilities at the stadium. Chairman Rob Godfrey said: "It’s always good to win, and we’ve had a great time in the Conference League, but its time to move on to the next challenge. "If it wasn’t for the Conference League the Scorpions wouldn’t have been formed because the Premier League is too much of a gamble for a club starting up in a field like we did. "However, we are ready now and it’s really exciting. Hopefully we’ll be accepted."
