From Berwick site:-
A consortium, led by Dunbar-based butcher John Anderson and Linda Waite (no relation) of Cornhill, Berwickshire, has taken control of the club from Peter Waite.
Waite, the now-former promoter of the Bandits, reported in from the BSPA (British Speedway Promoters’ Association) AGM in Spain late on Saturday evening, having concluded a manic, last-minute session of negotiations to place Berwick Speedway into new hands in time for inclusion in the 2009 Premier League.
The new promotional company is a consortium led by John Anderson of Anderson’s Quality Butchers of North Berwick (loyal and vital team sponsors of the Bandits for the past three years) and Linda Waite (again, it must be emphasised, no relation to Peter) of the Cornhill Village Shop -- who has also been a regular sponsor of the club in the past.
Outgoing owner Waite said: “Thankfully all has finally gone to plan, it has taken a mountain of work to pull the final strings together, but at last we’re there and all is okay.
“I’m leaving the club on a high after one of our best-ever seasons of results. It was really tough securing this deal, but the fans -- and the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed -- can rest assured that their speedway will continue in 2009.
“I’m so glad to have achieved this, and I can stand down and sit back and relax. It’s a massive relief to me.
“I cannot thank John Anderson and Linda Waite, who is no relation to my family at all, and the rest of their consortium enough for coming along so enthusiastically with this deal and saving Berwick Speedway.
“Their efforts must never be underestimated, especially as it was all a last-minute thing -- they have been amazing.
“I also want to take this opportunity to thank everyone associated with my time at the club, your help putting on our show has been stunning week in week out. Thanks also to the fans for supporting and helping me keep the place alive for nine amazing years, and the real stars – the host of riders who have been the Saturday-night entertainers. I think without my Bandits there are a good few riders who may never have ridden in the UK!
“It’s been a real rollercoaster of a trip, but thanks to John, Linda and their new group my ride is all but over and I have time now to take stock and move forward in other walks of life, but there’s no regrets, I wouldn’t have changed a thing. Now it’ll be back to the grandstand as a Saturday-night spectator for me, whenever I’m in town!
“Now is the time to move forward and most importantly upward – these people are the future of Berwick Bandits - please support the new guys, and thanks from me for all the good times.”
The new operational company takes charge with immediate effect. Once the official BSPA AGM press release is issued – most likely on Monday (17th) -- the new voices of the Bandits hope to make themselves known to the Border public.
