A top man and hasn't let the BSPA push him around - they tried and they failed Yes, Sandhu is increasingly appearing to be the only promoter with the rare combination of both financial clout and sense. What I don't understand is why some of the other promoters don't seem to be able to follow suit. I was having this discussion yesterday about who's making it work and who's not. I don't know how accurate the information is but it seems Poole, Coventry and Wolves are making a profit, but that Poole pay their riders less than other teams. So, what makes them the team that everyone seemingly wants to ride for? The riders are well looked after, they are paid on time, fans usually know where they stand and are kept informed, and M&M seem to be able to make things work. If some can do it, why can't others?

What I don't understand is why some of the other promoters don't seem to be able to follow suit. Because they're in speedway for glory purposes rather than for sound business reasons. that Poole pay their riders less than other teams. When the Purchases ran Oxford, they demonstrated that it was possible to run a relatively successful promotion that was just about profitable (and the official accounts appear to verify this). I think Steve Purchase was never very interested though, and I think the marital difficulties probably were the final nail in the coffin. I think the problem is that too many promotions pay well over the odds for mediocre riders. Leigh Adams had been the top rider in the BEL for a while when he was riding for Oxford, yet reputedly wasn't the highest earner. However, I guess some teams also get put over a barrel and are forced down the route of high wages.

Is it just about the Speedway meetings making the money?? I'm not sure what the facilities are like at Poole, but like Coventry Wolves have the Dogs. We also have the Stocks...(huge crowds for those) Bangers, we had monster trucks a month or so ago...They regularly have a circus in town. I don't know what the average crowd is at Brandon for the speedway though, when you look at how many staff there are about the stadium, I do wonder how they manage to break even to be honest. I do think there is a lot to be said for promotion of the sport aswell, something that even Coventry could do better..........

Coventry are in a fairly unique position as far as speedway's concerned, especially at Elite League level. Avtar Sandhu is the owner of both the club and the stadium. Now, I don't know how Sandhu runs operations - whether he runs the various activities and the stadium as separate entities, or whether everything's operated as a single unit. I suspect the former. But, whichever, essentially all monies go into the Sandhu pot. At other locations, the monies raised from alcohol (paulco's field of expertise rather than mine) and food outlets goes to the stadium owner rather than the speedway promotion.

Depends on the type of stadium . At Glasgow the stadium belongs to a non-league football club and the Tigers just pay a rental - food and bar-takings go to the Tigers promotion . But when we were at Shawfield it was very different - the bar takings went to the stadium owner , which is pretty much what the likes of Newcastle must have to put up with . By the way who owns that pretty beer tent at Berwick - i was well impressed with that .

Didn't bother with a programme when Glasgow visited then, paulco? Or just didn't bother reading Peter Waite's "Promotional Patter"? The beer tent, is, in the words of Waite himself, "controlled by the excellent TYNESIDE TAVERN, Bistro and Bar in Haddington, a fine place".

I bought a programme , but just to fill in the heat details . Too scared to read it in case i accidentally stumble on Dick Barrie's page .
