This coming Friday, the 24th October, could prove to be one of the most important dates in Exeter Speedway's history.

It's on this date that Allen Trump, who recently obtained Planning Permission to bring speedway back to the Exeter Racecourse at Haldon has a do or die meeting in London with the Jockey Club Property Board about the construction of the track and the inclusion of a number of contentious clauses in the agreement.

Said Trump "It's been very frustrating, we were ready to mark the track out in September and start digging it out, but there are a number of clauses in the agreement that we just cannot agree on and which effectively prevents us from moving on. Coupled with the fact that we're running out of time, this Friday's meeting with the Jockey Club really is do or die for next season".

Trump continued, "It would be tragic if after all the work, effort and time that went into getting Planning Permission at Haldon we fall at the final hurdle".

Trump, who has established an excellent working relationship with the Jockey Club wouldn't elaborate on the problems, but it has been rumoured that amendments to the original lease has put the project behind schedule and the Exeter promoter is becoming increasingly frustrated with a situation that could scupper the return of speedway to Exeter.

Perhaps the promotion getting cold feet in the current climate? Can't imagine why they'd issue a press release if there were just a few contractual issues to resolve, so one can't help but think this might be setting the scene for a graceful withdrawal.

Here's the latest Press Release from Exeter, which is an update to the statement in this weeks' Speedway Star.

Prospective Exeter Speedway promoter Allen Trump admits that time is running out for the Falcons planned return to racing in 2009. Trump has been negotiating a lease with the Jockey Club to build a new track within Exeter Racecourse but the project has now run into difficulties as the Falcons’ boss and the Jockey Club have been unable to agree the detail of some fundamental conditions which weren't contained in the original agreement.

“It’s very frustrating as we had hoped to have commenced our building programme by now,” explained Trump. “but unfortunately both the Jockey Club and ourselves have made several amendments to the lease and some of these clauses are unacceptable to the other side.

I must stress that we still have a very good relationship with the Jockey Club and during the last fortnight have overcome several stumbling blocks and made significant progress, but sadly there is still some way still to go. Both parties have certain requirements which at present are too far apart to reach agreement, however discussions are continuing and hopefully we can reach a positive solution.”

“If we cannot reach agreement soon I would be unable to declare our intention to run at the forthcoming British Speedway Promoters Association AGM. That would mean the loss of yet another racing season for the Falcons. In fact I think we are now potentially looking at 2010.”

“I realise this outcome will be extremely disappointing for our loyal fans who have waited so patiently for news, especially in the light of our success in gaining planning permission for the Haldon track in September after a three year struggle.

IMO their original statement about racing in 2009 was always unrealistic, this is just PR sop letting people down gently for 2010.

The most worrying line to me in that PR is:-

Both parties have certain requirements which at present are too far apart to reach agreement

If Mr Trump feels confident this can be overcome in time for the 2010 season, why is he not confident it can be overcome in time for 2009?

To my mind, this is very worrying.

Sounds obvious to me.

Beacuse sorting these problems out will take time and until they are sorted then there is no point in starting building work on the track and stadium.

Considering this is being built from scratch then they are going to quickly run out of time for it to be ready for the start of the 2009 season. The start of the 2010 season is a further YEAR away.
