A few days old, but I hadn't seen this before. From The Argus:
Eastbourne Eagles captain Lee Richardson has revealed he rode under protest in his side’s 52-41 defeat at Coventry tonight.
Richardson asked for permission from the British Speedway Promoters Association to miss the meeting so he could deal with a family emergency.
However, Eagles were told they could not use rider-replacement in their skipper’s absence and he would face a ban for with-holding his services if he did not ride.
Richardson opted to race and will also be in action when Eagles host Lakeside in the Knockout Cup semi-final tomorrow night.
However he said: “I was riding under protest at Coventry. I just asked for one night off to be with my family at a difficult time and I’m fuming at their refusal to allow that.
“I got on to the ACU, who hold my licence, and they said they could not believe what the BSPA had done. I’m not breaking any rules and the ACU would not have banned me from riding anywhere else, so I could still have earned money in Poland and Sweden.”
Richardson’s father-in-law was taken into hospital suffering from a brain tumour this week and the Eastbourne rider, along with his wife Emma and their two young children, have been staying in Bracknell to be close to him.

Until you notice that he rode in Poland on Sunday and Sweden yesterday, but missed tonight's meeting at Lakeside.

Until you notice that he rode in Poland on Sunday and Sweden yesterday, but missed tonight's meeting at Lakeside. And? Maybe there was reasons he needed/wanted to be there on Friday and not Saturday or Sunday? And that he wanted to be there tonight. Think about it.

I've thought about it. And then dismissed it. And this is Richardson we're talking about.

So he had to be there friday but not sunday and tuesday but had to be back tonight . And if it was that important who would you give a fuck if the bspa would have had banned you anyhow ?

Not to mention the difficulty of getting back quickly in a sudden emergency from Poland and Sweden compared to Coventry!

I'm with Marron on this one. Have a bit of compassion for christs sake you don't know the circumstances.

I thought the same LW, one of his close relatives is lying in hospital with a brain tumour! Whatever Rico has done this week or in the past, it's not a situation I would make light of and as you say nobody knows the full circumstances.

He can take as many days off as he wants for me. And without facing a ban. But Eastbourne shouldn't have been allowed a facility to cover for him. Maybe that's why he faced a ban. Because Eastbourne wanted a facility and the BSPA said "no", so the only option would've been "with-holding services" and a 28-day ban.

I think people would normally be sympathetic, but Richardson would seem to be the unluckiest rider around with his various ailments and ailing relatives.

I notice that when asked why Richardson wasn't at Lakeside last night, some of the fans assumed it was for the reasons given above, i.e, a family crisis. No official word about his absence, but a facility was granted, and R/R was used to cover for him. So have the BSPA had a turnaround, or was he missing for a reason other than naturally assumed? Or did he just tell them to bugger off (understandable), and is now facing a ban?

As a rule i stick for rico but to be honest why care about getting banned ? put your family first and if you get a ban so be it .
Then after all that he heads off to poland then sweden but can't ride the next el match ....you can see why people are having a pop .
