There cant be a track in Britain that is 400 metres, not even Exeter, Wembley or White City were that big. Wasn't Crewe somewhere around 400 metres? I don't think there's any minimum or maximum sizes for tracks in Britain, but longer tracks are generally not very practical in the venues here.

Well, the Daily Mirror 1981 Speedway Yearbook has the following:
Berwick (Shielfield Park): 440 yards - 402 metres Exeter (County Ground): 433 yards - 396 metres

I think it's one of those questions along the lines of 'what is the tallest building in the world'. There's no one answer. I'd guess that the longer the track, the faster the average speed, but at what point does a speedway track become a longtrack> The FIM defines speedway tracks up to 425 metres, with longtracks anything over that. However, that's an international definition, and there have certainly been longer tracks running speedway in the past. I'd have thought the old Claremont track in Australia must have been one of the quickest tracks, as that was 500 or 600 metres if memory serves. I've no idea which track would be the quickest now, but it would probably be over 400 metres. There cant be a track in Britain that is 400 metres, not even Exeter, Wembley or White City were that big. Actually White City was; it measured in at 402 metres after 1953.

I think the Custom House track was also around the 400 metre mark.

I'd have thought the old Poole track must have been close to 400 metres, if not more so as that went around a football pitch.

I think the Custom House track was also around the 400 metre mark. Not quite - it measured in at 379 metres. If we are talking about track sizes EVER, Custom house west ham used to be 402.33 metres. Programmes i have from 1937 and 1946 state the track length as 440 Yards, but a programme i have from 1955 show it to have been reduced to 415 Yards.

I see that new track records have recently been set at Sheffield (59.2 Ricky Ashworth) and at Coventry (57.6 Chris Harris).
If any Weirdos know of any others, it would be helpful if you can post the details, as often these things go unnoticed.
