The Cheetahs led 16-13 after five heats, before the score shifted to 42-29 in Poole's favour after 12 heats. CHEETAHS PIPPED IN FINAL RACE
Thursday, September 7, 2006 OXFORD 44 WOLVERHAMPTON 46 (Elite League B) Wolverhampton win aggregate point by 92-88
REPORT BY: Rob Peasley
WEATHER: Fine. TRACK CONDITIONS: Deep & grippy. MAN OF THE MATCH: Eric Andersson. REFEREE: Margaret Vardy.
Oxford just missed out on a sixth successive home win, as Wolverhampton came from six points behind in the final three races to snatch victory and keep their slim play-off hopes alive. The Cheetahs therefore missed out on an opportunity to put clear air between themselves & Arena Essex, and the battle at the bottom of the table now looks likely to go all the way to the final two fixtures of Oxford's season, both against the Hammers. The men who did the damage against the Cheetahs were Peter Karlsson and Billy Hamill, who both scored maximums and took a match-winning 5-1 in the deciding final race. Eric Andersson was in terrific form for Oxford from reserve, scoring paid 13, while David Howe, Adam Skornicki and Todd Wiltshire all performed well, although the latter suffered a puncture in Heat 10 which restricted his tally. However, Davey Watt had a shocking meeting, as he totally failed to come to terms with a deep, but still perfectly raceable, track surface, and his decision to give up prematurely in Heat 5, and therefore not to be in a position to take advantage when Christian Hefenbrock suffered an engine failure, proved to be very costly in the final analysis. The start of the meeting was held up, due to problems with the quality of the tyres supplied. This also led to a couple of delays later on, with Christian Hefenbrock having to swap tyres at one point. Peter Karlsson won HEAT 1, but only after resisting pressure from Todd Wiltshire, who closed right in on the final lap. Adam Skornicki took third, while fourth-placed Christian Hefenbrock straightened on the final bend, ran into the air fence and fell, although he was soon back on his feet (3-3). In HEAT 2, Eric Andersson & Lubos Tomicek took an untroubled 5-1 over Chris Schramm (in for Magnus Karlsson, who the Swedish authorities refused to release for this meeting) and William Lawson (8-4). Billy Hamill led HEAT 3 from start to finish, while there was drama on the fourth bend of lap 1, as Watt locked up. Watt managed to correct himself and stay on, but his mistake messed up the following David Howe & Ronnie Correy, with Correy recovering first and getting around Howe on the exit to the corner. But Howe was soon back on Correy's tail, and swept around him on the back straight of lap 3 to regain third place (11-7). Eric Andersson was the early leader of HEAT 4, but team-mate Adam Shields (again the guest for the injured Ales Dryml) found himself at the back after being shoved out wide by Freddie Lindgren on the first turn. Lindgren got level on the inside of Andersson on the third turn, but Andersson held on, before Lindgren switched to the outside and flew around Andersson on the back straight of lap 2 to take over first place. Meanwhile, Shields failed to make up much ground on Schramm, before going very wide on the final bend of lap 3. Shields failed to complete the final lap (13-11). Karlsson gated from Howe, Hefenbrock & Watt in HEAT 5, but it all got a little too tight entering the first turn, and Watt fell after contact with Hefenbrock. Referee Margaret Vardy stopped the race and ordered a re-start with all 4 competitors. Second time around, Karlsson was again first from the tapes and led all the way, with Howe second. Watt roared around Hefenbrock on the second turn, but then went wide on the fourth bend and Hefenbrock regained third. Watt then cruised around at the back for a couple of laps, before pulling up on third lap, although there was clearly nothing wrong with his bike. Hefenbrock then broke down with half a lap to go and pushed home for what proved to be a crucial point (15-15). Wiltshire showed his class in HEAT 6. Lindgren led the race, but Wiltshire was soon badgering him on the outside. Lindgren, under severe pressure, made a slight mistake on the exit of turn two of lap 3, and Wiltshire saw his chance, switching to the inside and roaring past the Swede down the back straight. With Skornicki in third, Oxford took a = 4-2 and edged back in front (19-17). Shields briefly led in HEAT 7, but Hamill zoomed around him on the second bend on the way to his second heat win of the night. Fourth-placed Tomicek went very wide on the fourth bend of lap 1, but had soon caught up Correy and was close to getting inside the American a couple of times, with Correy just holding on (21-21). Skornicki & Andersson took a comfortable 5-1 from HEAT 8, some way ahead of Hefenbrock & Schramm (26-22). Oxford extended their lead to six points in HEAT 9, with Howe resisting pressure from Lindgren to win the race - with the Swede particularly close on the inside at the end of the second lap - and Watt in third (30-24). HEAT 10 looked all set to be shared, with Hamill leading Wiltshire & Skornicki and Correy at the rear, however Wiltshire suffered a puncture after two laps and was forced to pull out of the race, handing Wolves a 4-2 (32-28). Shields hit the front in HEAT 11, but Karlsson came under him on the third turn, with Shields then trying to go back around on the fourth bend, but Karlsson shut the door and Shields had to settle for second place. Meanwhile, Tomicek tracked third-placed Hefenbrock, and Tomicek was still in contention, when his machine ground to a halt with half a lap to go, as Wolves closed in by another couple of points (34-32). Andersson & Howe restored Oxford's six-point lead in HEAT 12, with the pair getting out in front, and Howe then team-riding with his young partner (39-33). In HEAT 13, Karlsson (gate 2) just beat Wiltshire (gate 1) to the first bend, and with Wiltshire pinned to the inside, Lindgren came roaring around the outside on the second bend to take second. Wiltshire was soon back on Lindgren's tail, but despite trying both inside & out, couldn't get back past. Finally, on the final bend, Wiltshire forced his way inside Lindgren to snatch place and restrict Wolverhampton to a 4-2. A great ride by the veteran Aussie, again showing great trackcraft to pass Lindgren (who he also passed in Heat 6) (41-37). Hamill gated in HEAT 14, and held off a challenge from the lively Andersson on the opening bends. Watt was last away, but edged past Lawson down the back straight. Lawson regained the advantage entering the third bend, at which point Watt lost control and fell. Watt was soon up, but had been separated from the bike in the fall, which had ploughed into the air fence, and the race had to be stopped. With Watt excluded, the pressure was now on Andersson's shoulders. Hamill gated = in the re-run, then barged into Andersson on the second turn, with Andersson taken wide and Lawson coming through into second place. But Andersson refused to be beaten, and regained the ground on Lawson, before charging under him on the third bend of lap 3. As Lawson tried to come back around Andersson on the fourth bend, Andersson moved across and slammed the door shut - and Oxford took a two-point lead into the final race (43-41). The Cheetahs lost the crucial toss for gate positions for HEAT 15, and there was always a chance that if Wiltshire didn't make a clean getaway from gate 2, then Karlsson & Hamill would box him in on the first bend. That's exactly what happened, and it was then Howe who took up the chase of second-placed Hamill. Howe wasn't far away at times, especially on the inside coming off the final bend, but Hamill held on and Wolves snatched all three league points at the death (44-46).
A case of so close yet so far for the Cheetahs. Karlsson & Hamill were in devastating form, but Wolves were little more than a three-man team, and had it not been for a few silly lost points (Watt giving up in Heat 5, Wiltshire's puncture in Heat 10 and Watt's fall in Heat 14), then Oxford would have taken the three points from the evening rather than their opponents.

ERIC IN FINE FORM AT BRANDON
Friday, September 15, 2006 COVENTRY 54 OXFORD 38 (Elite League B) Coventry win aggregate point by 105-82
A fine performance by Oxford reserve Eric Andersson was not enough to save the Cheetahs from defeat at Brandon last night. On only his second-ever first to the track, the young Swede scored paid 12 from 7 outings. Andersson's tally was even more impressive, considering the pearler he took in Heat 8, after Billy Janniro ran into the back of him, resulting in a spectacular crash in which thankfully no-one was hurt. Meanwhile, Oxford captain Todd Wiltshire recovered from a two-minute exclusion in Heat 1 to weigh in with 8 points.
The Bees were soon control of the fixture, racing into a 23-13 lead, before in a mid-match revival, the Cheetahs took a 7-1 & a 5-1 from Heats 7 & 8 to level the scores at 25-25. However, with British Champion Scott Nicholls in irresistible form, and well backed by Chris Harris, Billy Janniro & Chris Harris, Coventry had too much firepower for Oxford in the closing stages.

CHEETAHS BLITZ HAMMERS IN EARLY RACES
Wednesday, September 27, 2006 OXFORD 55 ARENA ESSEX 37 (Elite League B)
Oxford Cheetahs finished their 2006 home programme in fine style, beating Arena Essex Hammers by a clear 18-point margin at Sandy Lane, despite the absence of Todd Wiltshire, riding in the Swedish play-offs. All the damage was done in the early races, with the Cheetahs registering five successive 5-1s between Heats 3 and 7.
Adam Shields, making another guest appearance for the injured Ales Dryml, scored a 15-point maximum for the Cheetahs, and he received excellent support from stand-in skipper David Howe (paid 14), Adam Skornicki (paid 13) and Davey Watt (paid 10).
The Cheetahs are now almost certain to avoid the wooden spoon, with Arena Essex needing to beat both Oxford (on Friday) and Eastbourne (next Wednesday) by highly improbable 40-point margins to overhaul the Cheetahs on race points difference.

CHEETAHS SET TO AVOID WOODEN SPOON
Friday, September 29, 2006 ARENA ESSEX 62 OXFORD 32 (Elite League B) Arena Essex win aggregate point by 99-87
Oxford Cheetahs finished the season with perhaps their worst performance of the entire season, crashing to a 30-point defeat at fellow strugglers Arena Essex.
The Cheetahs were simply not at the races on a superslick track, and hopes of clinging onto the aggregate bonus point were crushed as the Hammers took three successive 5-1s from the final three races.
Arena were reduced to five riders after Eric Andersson crashed into the back of Andreas Messing in Heat 2, with Messing subsequently withdrawing from the meeting. However, Messing's fellow reserve Henning Bager was in brilliant form, scorching to a seven-ride paid maximum, with Mikael Max also unbeaten by a Cheetahs rider.
Davey Watt (13 points) was easily the pick of the Oxford team, although Adam Skornicki battled very hard for his paid 7 return.
The only saving grace was that the Cheetahs remain three match points and 58 race points ahead of the Hammers. Therefore, Arena Essex would to take a massively improbable 75-15 maximum win in their final fixture against Eastbourne next Wednesday to overhaul the Cheetahs in the league table.
