Can't remember Radio Forth covering Monarchs live, well before '85 because I was at Blantyre or Powderhall but in '91 Dick was at Berrington and with no other speedway for me, I thought he was great. I can see how people can say how irritating Dick and Peter are, they are really much alike. Ah well, prior to 1985 I do believe various promotions at Powderhall took the unusual step of banning young Barrie from their stadium. The 1991 season at Berrington Lough was excellent - the Bandits had a very good set-up at Berrington Lough under the fisherman Dave Fairbairn (who had, of course, departed the scene by 1991, to be replaced by the flapperjack Terry Linden), whose numerous rough edges were smoothed by the much-missed Ian Graham. You mean you were there in '91, Subedei. Could have bumped into you. Linden was certainly the Flapperjack of that year. I miss Berrington.

Yes, I was there - used to stand at the starting gate. Linden was a flapperjack that year and an even bigger one the year after.

Dick Barrie was announcer at Belle Vue when Stu Bamforth was the promoter, and he used to call the Cradley fans the cabbage patch kids.

That's true enough and that was in 1984 - he was still calling the Cradley fans the "cabbage patch kids" in 1991. That's part of his problem - his gags get old and tired. If Cradley were still around today - and of course there are hopes of a return - he'd still be calling their fans "cabbage patch kids". Edit: As an aside it was sad to hear that the cigar-chomping Bamforth passed away a couple of years ago - wouldn't a "man to man" discussion between him and young Horton be worth watching?

It was the coldest place i've ever watched speedway . I still remember Mick Powell standing shivering on the parade in 1992 .

I find it hard to comprehend that there is actually a worse announcer out there than Dick Barrie . But there you go - nobody seems to have a good word to say about York - so maybe Dick has some serious competition . Sorry Paulco, I am going to diagree with you. I like Dick Barrie, he played a song for me when I joined up, a Jim Reeves one, 'I love you because' or something like that. Dick Barrie was great at Blantyre especially when we were against Mildenhall. As for Peter York, he is OK at Birmingham. He's twice as irritating at Birmingham - mostly because the PA system's better there than Cov and you can actually hear the crap he spouts. You can't actually like his over the top commentary throughout the last lap - surely? Dick Barrie was annoying, granted, but mostly because I couldn't understand him, being a sassenach and all.

Yeah, I do like the over the top commentary, mainly because I am in the posh area and don't know the riders without looking at the programme. Dick Barrie hasn't really got a Scottish accent So in theory I could call you what I like and you wouldn't understand me

Dick used to advertise speedway alot on his country show at 12 on a Sunday (my dad had it on, honest And he was on Radio Clyde at about 3 ish on a Saturday. Dick Barrie somehow epitomised the whole Smashey and Nicey generation. I mean look at the second photo down on this page... www.dickbarrie.co.uk/speedway/myinvolvement.htm

Always thought Pearson was a good pa man, shame about his tv work. Yes and no. Unfortunately, he comes from the modern generation of announcers who feel they have to constantly shout. Some of his non-public communications with people also don't especially endear them to him.

Peter York would really be stuck if the fixture was 'Coventry v Birmingham', two legs As would Mr Saul if there were a Sparklers V Panthers fixture what am i saying
