The 3 home/3 away is only used for team placement. I don't think that's right, young merlin. After all, Laukkanen's 3 home and 3 away average made a difference regarding who could guest for him - ruled out Lyons. And Newport's Rajkowski made numerous guest facilities at reserve when his 3 home and 3 away average was released. I believe the 3 home and 3 away average is merely used for team building. On reflection you must be right about the guesting position. But I don't believe that the 3 home/3away applies to team building. If you redeclare your team I'm pretty sure that the averages you have to use are the full averages whether from last year or, if gained, the 12 match average from this year - not the 3home/3away ones. That's why Arlo Bugeja had had such a hard time of it. He couldn't get rid of this albatross round his neck of the 5 point assessed average and as a result no-one really wanted to use up five points of their quota with him in the side since he couldn't perform to that level. He had ridden 8 matches so had his 3H/3A average but needed another four to shed himself of this 5 point average he still carries to get a proper one. If Berwick hadn't come along and given him this opportunity he would have started next year on his 5.00 point assessed average. The whole thing is so complex and fraught with difficulties and anomalies that it really needs to be simplified and made more flexible for the riders caught in traps similar to the one Bugeja found himself in. For Saturday's match Berwick have been clever. That's just about the best side they could have put together given the resources at their disposal. Wilkinson and Hawkins' best away meetings this year have been at Berwick and the Bandits have assembled Saturday's side by getting under the points limit with this 39.32 team by 0.68 points! It's probably the best side they will have tracked for some weeks. Mind you Michael Coles' best away track this season has been Berwick too. I think that Wilkinson and Hawkins give the side far more reliability than Burza and Kus although maybe not so much excitement. The weakness of the bottom three is counterbalanced to some extent by Katajisto in the Monarchs side together with our crap gating.

But I don't believe that the 3 home/3away applies to team building. Yes, that's what I was supposed to be saying, but I made a complete mess of it - the only thing the 3 home and 3 away doesn't affect is team building. Only a proper 6 home and 6 away average GSA is used for team building purposes.

Looking forward to this one, can the makeshift Bandits get close to those pesky heathen Monarchs? Possibly not, but it wont be for the lack of effort tonight with Wilko and Ritchie in the side. For the Monarchs expect Kaj, Jiri's boy, Desperado and the Tully-ban all to have good meetings add auld Wurzel Coles to that and we really do have our work cut out tonight. However any Bandits team with Wilko, Ritchie and the one Sub calls 'the second weird wonder' given his current form could push those Monarchs close. What will the Score be? Too close i would say, a basement battle of titanic proportions. Head says Monarchs Heart says Bandits C'mon the Bandits 47 - Monarchs 43 Edit: Scrap what i just said, i see the one paulco calls 'grand monarch' is in charge tonight, so getting any decision will be like pissing in the wind!

A wee gee-up for the Bandits tonight . Last night at Armadale ( aka - the stadium of mince ) John Campbell encouraged the Monarch faithful to descend on Berwick in their droves ( well more than 10 anyway ) to see the Monarchs win at Berwick and get in the Young Shield . So there you are Weirdity and guests - can you send them home tae think again .

JDC should have kept his mouth shut, nothing is ever certain in speedway.

Are you sure you are not a closet monarch paulco? Or was it the lure of a free bevvy?

You do know that Peter Waite and JDC are very good friends (even outside of speedway!). All JDC was doing was trying to ensure that there were some spectators there to witness this match. I guess Berwick need as many through the turnstyles as they can get. Peter Waite and the remaining Berwick fan should be grateful for the company. It gives 'Dick' Barrie someone to slaver at too.

But you always turn on the same target when you want to "cheer yourself up somehow"!!!! Just wait until Shane goes home this winter for good and we're chasing the league championship next year!!

Fair point Merlin, however do Edinburgh not struggle to get decent crowds especially this year because their fans are so fickle and will only support a winning team(not all the fans though before anyone gets excited) When you consider the Berwick is only a small town compared to the major cities that our nearest and dearest come from, Berwick do well to sustain speedway at all. You are right about the slavering pish that comes our centregreen man though.

Even the Bravehearts v Kangaroos match had a decent crowd given that it was only a 'kiddy-on' meeting (pardon the Glasgow-speak). I thought after we'd been well and truly duffed up by Redcar at home the crowd would drift away in droves but it didn't happen. In fact I detected a wee bit of feel good factor about the place last night (stadium of mince or not!) when the crowd was excellent. And don't get me wrong I'm glad that Berwick speedway continues to run. I know it can't be easy with a comparatively small catchment area from which to attract support. I give Peter Waite credit for keeping it going particularly in a season like this.

Well im glad to hear that the crowds have been okay this year at the Stade de Midden(sorry cant help myself! ) Armadale. We need speedway in the north to keep as many teams as possible. Will you heading south tonight Merlin?

Will you heading south tonight Merlin? Yes I must obey the JDCmeister and attend the Big Berwick Bowl. I'm bringing Dekker - the great Chatzone Panjandrum - so you've been warned. Hope to see you and Subedei. We'll no doubt be on the backstraight cheering on the Royal Regiment more in hope than expectation.
