Official press release - update on Chris Johnson.
Injured Wightlink Islander star Chris Johnson continues on his long road to recovery following his horrendous crash at King's Lynn at the end of last season.
Although ruled out of action for the forthcoming season with very serious leg injuries as a result of that crash, Hayling Island-based Chris fully intends to be at as many meetings as he can albeit as a spectator and has acquired an automatic car to enable him to get out and about.
As far as his injuries are concerned, he is hopeful that the medics will tell him that he's making good progress when he returns to the John Radcliffe hospital in Oxford for his next check up in a couple of weeks time.

IOW press release:
Further to our earlier press release today, we can now bring you the disappointing news that the Wightlink Islanders popular Polish star Krzysztof Stojanowski is going to be out of action for at least ten days. He visited the hospital in Newport on the island this morning for X-Rays on the wrist he damaged in a crash in his opening ride at Somerset last night and those X-rays have revealed that he has sustained a cracked left wrist. The injury has been encased in plaster and "Stodge" has been told to return to the hospital in ten days time for further X-rays when the hope is that the injured wrist will have healed. Obviously he's ruled out of both the away match at Welsh club Newport tomorrow afternoon and Tuesday's home meeting at Smallbrook when the Somerset Rebels provide the opposition and, quite probably, the away matches at Rye House (April 14) and Reading (April 16). In these matches, the Wightlink Islanders have no option other than to utilise the rider replacement regulations to cover for his absence which, in essence, means his rides will be shared amongst the other team members with everyone eligible to take at least one of his rides.

IOW press release:
The wrist injury sustained by Polish star Kryzsztof Stojanowski in last Friday's away Premier Trophy defeat at Somerset that will keep him out of tomorrow's (Tuesday) return match at Smallbrook, has led to the Wightlink Islanders' management re-shuffling their line up for the match. Unable to bring in another rider as a replacement for him, the Islanders have no option other than to utilise the "rider-replacement" rules to cover which means that his four programmed rides will have to be shared amongst the remaining six fit riders in the side. Skipper Jason Bunyan, Cory Gathercole, Paul Fry and Glen Phillips can each take one of the rides and reserves Andrew Bargh and James Holder can be used in any of them if required in addition to their own three programmed rides, subject to them each appearing a maximum seven times in the fifteen heats. In reality, barring any unforeseen further problems at the match, the first four named in the last paragraph will each take an additional ride and to ease any likelyhood of them appearing in two heats on the trot, Bunyan switches to the no.3 position in the side with Stojanowski's rides to be covered at No.1. In a further tactical switch, reserves Andrew Bargh and James Holder swop positions with Bargh riding at six and Holder at seven Obviously going into the match tracking six rather than seven riders places extra pressure on those riding tomorrow and thus the club's management have re-shuffled the team's riding order. "That's about the best we can do in the circumstances," said Islanders co-promoter Dave Pavitt.

When will the muppets at the BSPA learn how to write a press release.. always no more than about 5 lines with as little information as possible! And when will YOU realise that the daily bulletins issued by the BSPA Press Office are NOT and NEVER HAVE BEEN intended to be what you it seems would deem to be 'press releases!' They are merely "press updates" featuring normally two, sometimes although not often even three or more, brief stories together with updates on fixtures up and coming in the immediate future. The reason for the brevity of the news items is, in the main, so that they are suitable for publication on the various TV text services and for use on various radio station's 'sports updates' (whether or not they get used is down to the TV and radio companies) and also the circulation of an expanded official Press Releases issued by the clubs involved in the stories to their local press outlets by their relative press officers or whatever title you wish to give them is universally accepted as the correct way to tackle that aspect. And, of course, Swindon have issued a full such release today.

Injury update from the IOW press release:
The Wightlink Islanders now have injury concerns over two riders, Paul Fry and James Holder, and it appears certain that neither will be available for this weekend's matches at Edinburgh in the league and Workington in the cup. Fry has still not fully recovered from the leg injury he received in a crash at Berwick a few weeks back and was scheduled to have another appointment with specialists at his local hospital today (Tuesday) and he and the Wightlink Islanders management are both hoping that they will now have a clearer indication of how much longer he'll be sidelined for after that. And he seems set to be joined on those sidelines by young Aussie James Holder who has been riding through the pain barrier since breaking a bone in his hand in a crash during the home KO Cup win over Sheffield three weeks ago, cutting off the plaster his local hospital had encased his hand so that he could travel north with the team last Friday! But that gamble didn't really work out with James clearly below his best at Berwick and he like the Fryer, is due for another hospital appointment this week, tomorrow (Wednesday) in his case, and the expectations now are that he will undergo an operation to insert a plate in his injured hand. "We're not sure at this stage how long that will mean he's on the sidelines," said a club spokesman earlier today, "but knowing James it won't be long!

Fry is abysmal round Armadale and i'm sure Holder would have found the West Lothian arena a culture shock to say the least . R/R for Fry and a reserve guest for Holder ( with a bit of Armadale experience ) will make Friday's encounter a bit more interesting .

Hmmm I hope Holder gets a bollocking from the hospital for being a stupid bugger No need for him to get one of those at all! Latest news below and rider who was 'on call' to replace him has been stood down: ISLANDERS BOOSTED BY HOLDER ALL CLEAR... The Wightlink Islanders have been boosted by the news that in-form Australian reserve James Holder has been given the go ahead to carry on riding and, contrary to his and the club's expectations earlier in week, he will be travelling north with the rest of the team and riding in tomorrow night's league match at Edinburgh and in the first leg of the KO Cup quarter final at Workington on Saturday. It had been expected that a visit to his local hospital in Poole yesterday would lead to specialists telling him that he would need an operation to repair the bone in his hand that he broke during the recent home cup match against Sheffield. Instead, the medics told him that X-rays showed that the injury was nigh on healed and that, provided he strapped the hand suitably, they could see no reason why he shouldn't carry on riding. "It's great news," he said, "because the last thing I wanted was to have to have time off from racing especially as we two vital matches this weekend and another home match next Tuesday.

Press release:
There's not long to wait now for we believe that we will be in a position in a matter of a few days now to make a major announcement that will bring a real 'wave' of excitement not only to our club, but to the whole of the Isle of Wight.
Speculation?
And last night's result (from IOW press release):
The Wightlink Islanders Premier League KO Cup dreams are over for another year after they failed to pull back the 15 points deficit they faced from the away leg against the Workington Comets in the return, sponsored by Hartwell of Carisbrooke Rd, Newport at Smallbrook stadium last night They went into the match trailing 53-38 after that first leg in Cumbria and although Jason Bunyan and his side won last night's encounter by 51 point to 43 it wasn't enough, and it's the Comets who now go onto meet the Edinburgh Monarchs in the semi-finals. The Islanders had received a big boost yesterday morning when Paul Fry, sidelined for the last month following his crash in the league match at Berwick, confirmed that at last the medics had given him the all clear to resume racing. Furthermore Workington were forced to go into the match bereft of the services of their No.1 Daniel Nermark who was racing for his club Piraterna in their away league match at Masarna back in his native Sweden. Although they were certainly taking nothing for granted prior to the meeting, all the indicators pointed to the fact that an aggregate victory was well within the Wightlink Islanders capabilities but it wasn't to be! After the opening eight heats last night they had indeed moved into the aggregate lead albeit by a mere point as they led 33-17 on the night and therefore 71-70 overall. It looked as if the remaining seven races would see the task completed with ease but the Cumbrian side's skipper Kauko Nieminen and the man who has long been dubbed "Mr. Workington Speedway" Carl Stonehewer had other ideas! And it was that duo who stunned the home camp by inspiring their side onto overall victory with Stonehewer the star of the show as he romped to 17 points from his six rides which included no less than four heat victories. The home side were left stunned but co-promoter Dave Pavitt was somewhat philosophical afterwards saying, "the tie was there for us to win and, when you boil it down to basics we just didn't do what was necessary to see us through to the semis. "Yes we're disappointed but we must congratulate Workington, wish them luck in the rest of the competition and now, from our perspective put our disappointment behind us and knuckle down to the task of ensuring that we do what is required to reach the play offs for the league title." There was an injury scare surrounding in-form reserve James Holder after he crashed whist in second place in heat 12 and he took no further part in the match. However the good news is that whilst he aggravated his existing hand/wrist injury, he's confident that it won't prevent him riding in our away league matches at Sheffield (Thursday) and Stoke (Saturday).
LAST NIGHT'S MATCH DETAILS:
Final Score: Wightlink Islanders 51 Workington 43 (Premier League KO Cup 1/4 Final, 2nd leg) Workington win 96-89 on aggregate
IOW scorers (in riding order - No. of rides in brackets): Jason Bunyan 12+1 (5), Corey Gathercole 9+1 (4), Glen Phillips 7+1 (4), Paul Fry 6+1 (4), Krzysztof Stojanowski 9+1 (4), Andrew Bargh 2+1 (4), James Holder 6+2 (4).
