Another miserable night for the home fans at Armadale in front of a surprisingly good crowd in all the circumstances. However some explanation is needed.
Firstly - clearly there was some sort of problem that prevented Jason Lyons from riding as a guest for Kai Laukkanen. I gather it was an average thing and we weren't on the boil so discovered too late that we'd boobed. Was there any hint in the text sent out about the match. No! Now Jason Lyons guesting for us was published all over the place...the Edinburgh Evening News, Official Website, Internet Forums etc. You might have thought then that there would have been some sort of explanation to the fans who had turned up expecting him to be in the team about his non-appearance. But no...not a whisper...absolutely nothing. We stood in dismay listening to Scott Wilson telling us that Jacek Rempala was at number 3.
Secondly, arguably the worst visitors to Armadale are Berwick (actually Sheffield might be worse). So where did we turn for our two guests...yes you've got it in one...Berwick. To parade Jacek Rempala at number three was just an insult to the fans and team even if he was the only one available at such short notice. It would have been infinitely better to have gone with Rider Replacement than this guy. Forget that he was paid for 5 points. He beat Craig Branney and a simply woeful Mattia Carpanese. That's all! What do you make of a guest for your top average man who two wheels round at the back to pick up a gift 1+1 (in heat 12). He was just as bad as I feared when I heard the news.
No criticism of Sam Martin who did his best and executed an excellent pass on John Branney in heat 8. He then passed with ease the dismal Rempala in heat 12 for second place. He did more than we had a right to expect.
It was clear that George Stancl wasn't up to it. I don't know whether it was a physical or machine thing but 5 points was very poor. Just what we didn't need in the circumstances. Full credit as usual goes to Derek Sneddon, Matthew Wethers and Andrew Tully. They fought to the bitter end and kept the ship afloat until the last race. Kalle Katajisto's score was a bit fortunate but he stayed on his bike to pick the points up and paid 6 is probably his best return to date.
Workington had three heat leaders. Ostergaard fell in his first race then was unbeaten. James Wright looked the best rider on the night until Matthew Wethers got the bit between his teeth in heat 15 to round him brilliantly on the fourth bend of the second lap to ruin his maximum and Kauko Nieminen made some fast starts to hit double figures.
But I thought Charles Wright was the surprise package of the night. Trust him to hit us with 10+1 from six rides (including a fall). Craig Branney made too many mistakes and had to settle for his heat 7 win while John Branney did enough. However Mattia Carpanese was simply terrible. He looked all at sea and finished miles behind the field in each of his three rides (apart from heat 1 when he finished ahead of Ostergaard who had fallen and remounted).
The Monarchs' season just goes from bad to worse.
Scorers: Edinburgh - Andrew Tully 11+2 (4) (incl 6 point TR), Derek Sneddon 9+2 (5), Matthew Wethers 8 (5), George Stancl 5 (4), Kalle Katajisto 4+2 (4), Jacek Rempala 4+1 (4), Sam Martin 3 (4).
Workington: James Wright 12+1 (5), Kauko Nieminen 12 (5), Charles Wright 10+1 (6), Ulrich Ostergaard 8+1 (4), John Branney 3+1 (3), Craig Branney 3 (4), Mattia Carpanese 1 (3).

Forget that he was paid for 5 points. Paid for six points, surely? Finished behind team mate Tully in Ht 5 and team mate Martin in Ht 12. You're not trying to diddle the Weirdity out of a paid point, are you?

All this ranting! tut, tut. Think you should look closer to your No.1 the 'shite guest' 5 pts from Jiri's boy. Also this is what happens when you sign a rider with overseas commitments. You are right about the fact that Berwick are one of the worst visitors to Armadale, however maybe JDC should have tried for Stan.

I don't think he had fully recovered from his smash of two weeks ago. The doctors had advised him not to ride for three or four weeks. Nor do I blame it on the absent Laukkanen. The main reason was the mix up over Lyons' average which had suddenly kicked in taking him higher than Laukkanen. It wasn't discovered until the green sheets arrived late on Friday afternoon leaving Rempala as one of the few options. I can't believe the Edinburgh promotion saw that as a better option than Rider Replacement. In the pits/stadium last night were Trent Leverington, Kevin Little, Robert Ksiezak, Kenny McKinna and Doug Templeton any one of whom would have been better than the 'Weirdity'.

Merlin you make some quality points however some are pure tosh! The weird one was asked to guest for whatever reason, short notice unavailable riders elsewhere who couldn't commit or for whatever reason, no he aint the best rider round the Dale everyone knows that even the Edinburgh Promotion knows it but it was him who said he'd do it, he was never going to be the rider who won the meeting for you's and too be honest as Workington were always going to take a load of points from their meetings this weekend. As for Trent Leverington, Kevin Little, Robert Ksiezak, Kenny McKinna and Doug Templeton, 3 are retired and you would have had something to say had a Tiger with a lower average than was available had come in to guest no matter whether they had scored double figures or not ;D Before you reply about typical response from a Berwick fan 1. The weird one isn't one whom deserves to be in a Bandits Jacket as far I'm concerced never mind an Edinburgh Jacket as a guest 2. I've seen more meetings at the Dale this season than at Berwick so I have no allegiance to Berwick this season or the weird one

Edinburgh's biggest problem last night wasn't his weirdness the Rempala - it's the same as it was in the Glasgow meetings and that's a lack of mega-points from reserve. I haven't looked, but my guess is that most Edinburgh wins this season have resulted from having a reserve taking seven rides and scoring mega-points. Tully and Sneddon at the outset and then successively Wethers and Tully again. Without a mega-points reserve, the Monarchs struggle.

The Monarchs are not a happy bunch just now - so take pity on them . The original mistake was the Monarch promotions for not keeping up and being aware of the minefield which is the speedway rules system . Although it's funny how this mistake was noticed in time , but Berwick's at Newport wasn't . Anyway any one whose seen Rempala try to negotiate the tricky West Lothian circuit will have realised there is no way he'd score even as many as Laukkanen , never mind Lyons . So it smacked as a case of there was no one else . Although i wouldn't have thought it would have been too difficult to get a hold of Christian Henry . But Sub is correct - it's been the possibilty of giving the likes of Wethers 7 rides that have got the Monarchs out of jail before ( Birmingham at home springs immediately to mind ) and now that facility is no longer there so their season seems to be imploding at an alarming rate . 2007 cant finish quick enough for the boys in blue and gold . Mind you they've got Sheffield at home next - and they're even worse than Berwick at Armadale so they'll surely win that one .

Three points:
1. The main reason for Edinburgh's defeat lies in the failure of the promotion to notice that Lyons was ineligible to replace Laukkannen. There were other options (eg Kyle Legault) who would in my opinion have turned this match around even with a scratch reserve pairing.
2. OK so Rempala did take the booking. (I wonder what guarantee he was on.) My main criticism of the guy is that he doesn't even try. Once at the back he has no interest in the race and the fans are left with the spectacle of a rider tootling round and two wheeling into corners. That's not what they pay to watch and that's why I'm so critical. Does he never do that at Berwick?
3. Edinburgh shouldn't need to rely on a reserve taking 7 rides. The top 5 is OK with the 'boilerhouse' of Sneddon, Wethers and Tully capable of pulling more than their weight. What they can't cope with is one of the top two absent or under the weather in addition to carrying Kalle Katajisto. The available replacements for Tessari are very few and unlikely to be good enough.
Sheffield arrive next week. Normally this match is a walk in the park but once sides with a target in sight (ie the playoffs) smell blood they have a different approach to the match. After winning at Somerset last night and sensing a wounded side I would not be surprised to see them go home with all the points. They have won at Armadale in the past and Andre Compton and Ricky Ashworth usually score well there.

These mistakes happen from time to time because of the complexity of the rules - unfortunate for the Monarchs last night , but just another statistic of a faltering season . But i agree with you r/r would have been a better option than having a guest who has never set the heather alight in any previous visit to the track .

The main reason was the mix up over Lyons' average which had suddenly kicked in taking him higher than Laukkanen. It wasn't discovered until the green sheets arrived late on Friday afternoon leaving Rempala as one of the few options. I thought it was Laukkanen's average (3 home, 3 away) that had kicked in, taking Laukkanen below Lyons, since surely the GSAs run from month-to-month and Lyons' won't change until September 1st, 2007. I assume Laukkanen rode his third home meeting, against Glasgow, last week and with the average kicking in seven days after that meeting it came into force just ahead of the Workington meeting.
