Stan Tebby is very much an unknown in British speedway as a rider. To most supporters he is better known as being the mechanic for his son Jim, who rode for Harringay, Wimbledon and Newport in the 1950s-1970s. Stan's riding career started at the old California-in-England track in 1938, and most of his British speedway centred on the one-time open meetings staged there until the miid-1950s. His only known racing on a major British track was in a few second-half races at Harringay in the mid-1950s. Other than that, Stan mainly competed on grass tracks in the south of England until the mid-1960s. However, from the mid-1960s into the 1970s Stan was a member of France's Victor Boston Speedway Troupe along with riders like George Bason, Pete Rogers, Bob Warner and Geoff Harris. He retired from racing in the mid-1970s when into his late sixties. Stan did make one on track appearance at Wimbledon when he coolly won an end-of-season ‘mechanics race’ while also smoking a cigarette. As a rider, the only knows photo of Stan was taken at a French meeting ib the late 1960s. He is seen kneeling on the right with the French rider Claude Boston, Outside riding, Stan Tebby also designed a unique rear suspension for a speedway bike, as also illustrated. Attachments:
