Who is the oldest former track official/rider? At the moment I nominate Al Holliday. He was a junior rider at the old California-in-England track and at Eastbourne in 1954. At Eastbourne he was also a pits marshall and several times was stand-in team manager for then promoter Charlie Dugard. In the early 1960s Al made a brief return as a rider at Rayleigh. Elsewhere in speedway Al was also mechanic to former Harringay and Rayleigh rider Maury McDermott and also spannrman for 1954 Eastbourne rider the Australian John Gronow. Al's other speedway involvement included being a track raker at Wimbledon in the mid-1950s, later graduating to being a starting gate official and acting in a similar capacity at Wembley for a 1950s World Chamionhip final. On Monday December 30 2019 Al celebrated his 93rd birthday.
