I think that Wal Morton should be honoured as 'the oldest active rider'. He started in junior events at Birmingham and Coventry circa 1932 and ended his career aged 54 years at Hackney in 1964. In that time he rode for many clubs - some of them several times. They included West Ham, Wimbledon, Norwich, White City (Glasgow), Harringay, Ipswich, Bradford, Middlesbrough. At the time of his retirement Morton was 54 years old. Besides speedway, in 1954 Morton driving as Spencer Morton was a leading driver in stock car racing at Norwich. In the 1930s Morton led England teams in unofficial test series against Australia in matches staged at Perth, West Australia (1936-37 and 1937-38).
