Al Sparrey started racing on grass tracks in the early 1950s. He then switched to speedway in 1952 and had a few second half rides at West Ham. His breakthrough in the sport came in 1955 when he joined then Southern Area League club Rye House. With the then 'Roosters' Sparrey became a leading rider delighting his fans with a robust style of riding which, however, did not always meet with the approval of his opponents. His breakthrough chance at the top level came with Swindon who were then a National League Division Two side. Sparrey made a good start to his career with the Robins then made a shock decision to retire. Sparrey then made a return to racing in 1959 when he joined open licence club Yarmouth, spending two seasons with the East Anglian side before again retiring.
