ROBERT Lambert has been handed a Wild Card into the three-round World Under-21 Final.
The King’s Lynn and Newcastle youngster just missed out on qualification in last Saturday’s weather-curtailed event at Belle Vue, but has received the nod for the Final and joins fellow British riders Adam Ellis and Josh Bates in the series.
GB Youth boss Neil Vatcher said: “We almost had the perfect weekend when both Adam and Josh secured top four finishes in their tough semi-finals to claim their places in the series.
“It was looking good for Robert, as after three rides in his semi at Belle Vue he was lying in fifth position but still had two races remaining and in both of those heats he was coming off the favourable inside gates, only for the rain to intervene and call a halt to the proceedings.
“Unfortunately, at the time the referee had no option but to abandon the meeting and as all riders had completed three rides each, the FIM rules state that the result stands, which at that point meant Robert just missed out on qualification by one point.
“I said to Robert that because of the circumstances I felt that we had a good case to get a pick as one of the permanent Wild Cards, and after a couple of nervous days awaiting the decision we were delighted to hear late yesterday that we got the answer we had all hoped for.
“So now with a only a couple of weeks before the series begins, British Speedway has plenty to look forward to, with only ourselves and the very strong nation of Poland having three representatives in this years Final series.
“At Junior level it has taken a long time for British Speedway to have any success, but I have been shouting our cause for many years now saying that the kids are coming and we had to be patient, and now with three representatives in this Final series, this is something for all of British Speedway to be proud of.
“This is where the hard work begins, as now this is the best of the best, and none of the races in these Finals will be easy, but as I said we’re very proud for British Speedway to have three representatives.”
The Final series begins at King’s Lynn on June 18. If anyone wishes to help with sponsorship for Adam, Josh or Robert to help compete with the World’s best, please contact younglionsspeedway@hotmail.co.uk .
