SCUNTHORPE: TRACK OF THE YEAR AWARD
WEDNESDAY JANUARY 26, 2011
After years of being close to the title Scunthorpe Speedway has won the 2010 Track of the Year. In an award that was the result of the referees markings at each meeting the Eddie Wright Raceway pushed Elite League Track of the Year Wolverhampton back into second place whilst claiming the top honours in both the Premier League and National League.
After being handed his certificates club promoter Rob Godfrey couldn’t hide his delight. “This has been a long time coming and finally confirms what I have believed for the last six seasons. We have a fantastic race track which provides some absolutely amazing racing”.
“We have unlimited amounts of material available, permanent use of a motorway blade and an excellent track team of Graham Trollope and John Priestley. Good track preparation on one night can rely a little on luck but to provide a track of consistently high standards you need the right ingredients and at Scunthorpe we are lucky because we have them”.
“With short straights and long wide bends our track reminds me of Trelawny where I reignited my passion for the sport. That was a fantastic race track and with our banking I think we’ve surpassed it. This is our ‘Field of Dreams’ and seven years after we started our dream our efforts have been recognised officially. I am so very proud of what has been achieved here and hopefully one day we’ll become the ‘Stadium of the Year’ too. I know there isn’t such an award but in my mind that is what we’re aiming for. We are continually making improvements and we’ve come a long way seven years. Rome wasn’t built in a day and maybe one day the stadium will be world class just like the track”.
