Team building has started with Karlsson and Howe. From www.scunthorpespeedway.comThe Henderson Insurance Scunthorpe Scorpions top two riders, David Howe (pictured above right) and club captain Magnus Karlsson (above left), have committed to the club for the 2010 season. Both riders announced the fact to fans after last Friday’s Kenny Smith Memorial Meeting at the Eddie Wright Raceway with Howe going on to say that he would be happy to spend the next ten to fifteen years with the club. With the team building limit likely to be set at 42.50 points the pair take up 16.85 (8.62 Howe and 8.23 Karlsson) to leave 25.65 for the remaining five places in the starting seven.
Commenting afterwards Scunthorpe Speedway Promoter Rob Godfrey admitted he was absolutely delighted to secure the services of one of the league’s top pairings. “It is a fantastic start to our 2010 team building. I believe both riders will have big years next season. David was one of just six riders in the Premier League to average over nine (including bonus points) this season and I believe we will have two riders next year who will manage it. In anybody’s book that gives us a powerful spearhead. David was the master of our track over the last few months of the season, dropping just four points in his last seven meetings. I’m sure he will continue to improve on the other tracks around the league and he could be close to leading the averages next year”.
“As for Magnus his away form is already amongst the best in the league and he probably only needs to add half a point to his home average (9.20 for 2008) to become one of the top five riders in the league. Over the last couple of weeks he has been outstanding at home and it would be great if he could carry that form into next season. Both riders are obviously happy at Scunthorpe and long may it continue. They are an outstanding duo and a great start to our plans for next year.”

Team building continues at a pace for Scunthorpe......taken from BSPA site;-
HOT on the heels of their first two signings the Henderson Insurance Scunthorpe Scorpions have announced two more of the 2009 side will return to ride in 2010.
Carl Wilkinson, who filled the third heat-leader in the side, will return for his third season with the club as will fellow club asset, Viktor Bergström, who was in outstanding form at the Eddie Wright Raceway before injury ended his season at the end of August.
Club Promoter Rob Godfrey feels the pair, like Magnus Karlsson and David Howe who are already signed, are good value on their team-building averages. “Carl did a solid job as third heat-leader this year and still managed a seven-point average. Everyone can see he gives his all in every race he rides and, whilst you sometimes have your heart in your mouth, you can’t ask any more from a rider. He comes in on a 6.58 average and if he can just become a bit more consistent at home then he’ll easily improve on that. He hasn’t had much luck mechanically this season whilst Viktor’s problems have been injuries and his confidence when coming back from them”.
“However, Viktor was at his best just prior to the injury that ended his season and even afterwards he was a different person. His confidence is most definitely back and I’m sure he’ll be fine when he starts next season. His team-building average is just 5.03 and I’m sure he will add at least a point to that next year”.
With 28.24 team-building points used on the four riders signed so far the club have 14.26 left for the last three places. Godfrey added “I’m absolutely delighted with the riders we have signed so far and I’d like to complete next year’s line-up just as soon as possible”.

Wilko told us last week he was happy to be returning to Scunthorpe, and to be fair to the lad, hopefully, if he doubles up with us again, he will actually have another rider to take some of the meetings . He is notoriously bad with his equipment and the added stress on it of having so many EL meetings must have been a contributing factor in his performances in the PL as well. Lovely lad, and always a good bloke to have in the team, mechanical gremlins aside, he is a 100% man always.

Bergstrom? hmmm away he is a liability. He's also still injured, and says it could take another six months to regain full mobility in his wrist.

SCUNTHORPE Scorpions will today unveil the new rider they are bringing into the team to replace the injured Joel Parsons. He is 26-year-old Finnish ace Tero Aarnio who will fly into England on Wednesday with a view to making his debut against King's Lynn at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday night. He rode in the Premier League last season for Berwick Bandits, finishing with an average of 4.95. But this season has just been riding in Finland and Denmark. "He came to our notice when he won an individual meeting here a couple of years ago, but we did not follow it up," said promoter Rob Godfrey. "When we contacted Tero to see if he would come over and ride for us, he jumped at the chance. "He did not have the best of seasons last year at Berwick, but he is a racer and our track should suit him much better." At the moment, the Scorpions are using rider-replacement for their other injured star Viktor Bergstrom who has needed a skin graft on an arm injury which is likely to keep him sidelined for a month. "I will be having a chat with Viktor and if he feels it will take longer than a month, then I will have to bring in a guest rider to replace him," said Godfrey. "We are not strong enough at the moment to use rider-replacement." Godfrey's concern is at the bottom end of the order where reserves Jerran Hart and Simon Lambert are both struggling for form. Lambert managed only one point at Somerset last Friday night where the Scorpions were beaten 47-43. But they did manage to salvage a bonus away point thanks to a last heat 5-1 maximum from skipper Magnus Karlsson and guest rider Justin Sedgman. "Our away form was our weakness last season, so to pick up a point from our first away meeting in the league this season has got to be pleasing," said Godfrey. "It might have been even better if Sedgman and Carl Wilkinson had not suffered machine problems at important times for us. "But overall, I think the result was about right." David Howe is still easing his way back to full fitness from his shoulder injury. He was unable to ride in heat 15 at Somerset because he was in too much pain. But Howe will be in action tonight as Scunthorpe face the return against the Rebels at the Eddie Wright Raceway (6pm). Sheffield rider Paul Cooper will be the guest replacement for Parsons. Immediately after the Premier League meeting, Scunthorpe Saints will be in National League action against Dudley. www.sportscunny.co.uk/scunthorpescorpions/Aarnio-replace-injured-Parsons/article-2099526-detail/article.html
