Oxford win aggregate point by 94-89
(Conference League)
Oxford secured second place in the Conference League table with a comfortable win over the Plymouth Devils, the team they will face in the play-off semi-finals.
While the race for the aggregate bonus point went down to Heat 15, in reality the Cheetahs were much the better side and could have racked up sixty points if not for lost points due to engine failures and falls.
Oxford stormed into a 16-8 lead after four races, with the track quite heavy in the early stages, due to rain leading up to the start-time of the fixture.
Jordan Frampton looped at the start of Heat 5, but the tape mechanism was playing up and he was given a reprieve by referee Christina Turnbull. In the re-run, Frampton thrust aggressively inside Seemond Stephens on the third turn to move into second place, but a lost chain for Frampton denied the Cheetahs a 5-1.
A determined Kyle Hughes passed Nicki Glanz on the opening lap of Heat 6 to follow home team-mate Lee Smethills, and Oxford moved twelve points in front.
Danny Betson thwarted Tom Brown’s tactical ride in Heat 7, while Hughes won Heat 8 by the proverbial mile.
Frampton borrowed Betson’s bike for Heat 9, but lost control on the second bend, and brought down both himself and team-mate Smethills. Smethills took quite a heavy knock, but after a visit to the medical room, dusted himself down and came out to win the re-run.
Hughes suffered a dubious exclusion from Heat 10, after Rob Smith lost control directly in front of the Cheetah on the fourth bend and left him nowhere to go.
Heat 11 saw Niall Strudwick fall on the opening lap, before Jaimie Pickard took a tumble on the third lap. The race was stopped and awarded as a 3-2 to Oxford.
Frampton was in hot pursuit of Brown in Heat 12, but lost a chain on the final bend while attempting to cut under his opponent, and Ben Hopwood came through to join Brown for a 5-1.
That left the Devils just seven points in arrears, but the imperious pair of Betson and Smethills slammed in a 5-1 in Heat 13, and then Brendan Johnson & Frampton packed the minor places behind Smith in Heat 14.
The Cheetahs held a one-point aggregate lead going into Heat 15, where Betson & Smethills took a 5-1, as Betson finished with a full maximum and Smethills with a paid maximum.
Betson was selected as Linda De Boise Memorial Rider Of The Night by Pete Dring.
Kyle Hughes & Danny Betson received £150 each after a collection by the Oxford fans. The Supporters’ Club also handed over £150 each to Lee Smethills, Brendan Johnson and Sam Martin from the Conference League Riders Support Fund.
