The youtube thread's almost exhausted, so I thought I'd try something new. Each week we'll post a famous artist, and ask you to vote for your favourite song. Let's start with some ABBA, and here's my choice: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndCTp5z5TyY

Ditto - a beautiful, sad song.

It's a great tune, but the lyrics are crap. A potentially good song ruined by pap lyrics, a bit like "Champagne Supernova" by Oasis. I mean, "...slowly walking down the hall, faster than a cannonball" is just nonsense.

Are you having a laugh.....? It's the lyrics that make this song.... No, I find them twee. For example: "...the gods may throw a dice, their minds as cold as ice" and "...the judges will decide, the likes of me abide" are just very poor. The tune itself is wonderful.

But what about: "I don't wanna talk If it makes you feel sad And I understand You've come to shake my hand I apologise If it makes you feel bad Seeing me so tense No self-confidence But you see The winner takes it all The winner takes it all......" ABBA writing their songs in a different language to their own led to the odd duff lyric, but "The Winner Takes It All" is their most heartfelt and most effective songs.

And I understand You've come to shake my hand You prove my point, the above is just twee nonsense. And don't give me that foreign language nonsense - ABBA did great lyrics for "Knowing me knowing you" and a host of other songs. But they messed up on Waterloo with: ...at Waterloo Napoleon did surrender". That's historically inaccurate. Napoleon never surrendered at Waterloo. He abandoned his army in the field (for the third time, having "done a bunk" at the end of the Egyptian and Russian campaigns before), abdicated and subsequently surrendered to the British, but not at Waterloo.

And I understand You've come to shake my hand You prove my point, the above is just twee nonsense. No the way it's sung, though. Poor Agnetha (that was the name of the blonde one, I think) puts real pathos into the performance. Anyway, I don't rate your view that highly, as you've already dispelled the magnificent Champagne Supernova as "twee nonsense".

How can you take seriously a song that contains the line "...slowly walking down the hall faster than a cannonball"? It's just twaddle. Okay, "...saw you walking down the hall faster than a cannonball" would've been okay. Not an outstanding contribution to the art of lyrics, but at least not mindless twaddle. That line ruins a potentially fine song.

OK, next time Oasis come out with an album, I'm sure Noel Gallagher will be around beforehand to check with you if his lyrics make sense. They usually don't make much sense. He's an awful lyricist. And usually copies someone else's melody. For example, check the start of "Don't look back in anger" and spot the "Imagine" opening.

I love the lyrics of "I Am The Walrus", for instance, and they don't make sense.
