Yes sports fans the 2009 season is almost with us and we consign the horrors of 2008 to the history books . Hope springs eternal with the dawn of a new season , and we head back to Scotland's premier speedway venue with renewed optimism . Work has been carried out during the winter to get the track back to something close to it's former glory and a team full of promise has been assembled . Out from the 2008 side go Trent Leverington and Lee Dicken , to be replaced by record Ashfield points scorer James Grieves and Danish prospect Peter Juul . Our glorious leader goes into his farewell season and we welcome back Ross Brady , Josh Grajczonek , Mitchell Davey and Anders Andersen . First up in March is a visit from Elite League side Belle Vue . For this meeting we will line up like this - 1 Shane Parker ( captain ) 2 Ross Brady 3 Peter Juul 4 Josh Grajczonek 5 James Grieves 6 Mitchell Davey 7 Anders Andersen And the referee will be the Grand Monarch , who will have a surprising assisstant for the afternoon .
Seven days later it will be the more traditional start of the season affair against that mob from along the M8 . Two cracking challenge matches to get us underway before the real stuff starts in April .

Well, let's hope this March isn't a prelude to the heathen Tigers turning into an "April Shower". Big doubts over the team have to be Peter Juul Larsen and Mitchell Davey.

Peter Juul certainly talks the talk as far as his ambitions for this season goes , so we wait with anticipation to see if he can walk the walk . Mitchell isn't a doubt , we all know what to expect there - which sadly isn't a lot .

And we've drafted in Kevin Doolan for Sunday's opener against Belle Vue , with Mitchell Davey and Anders Andersen sharing the number 6 jacket . Line-ups are - Glasgow 1 Kevin Doolan 2 Peter Juul 3 The Messiah 4 Trainee Messiah 5 Grievsey 6 Andersen/Davey 7 Ross Brady
Belle Vue 1 Krzysztof Kasprzak 2 James Wright 3 Charlie Gjedde 4 Henning Bager 5 Ulrich Ostergaard 6 To be confirmed 7 Patrick Hougaard
Referee is the Grand Monarch .
A very strong looking BV side will surely attract a bumper crowd to the Messiahdome on Sunday .

And a good start to the season for the Messiah as he ends up second to GPer Sebastian Ulamek in Birmingham's traditional season-opening individual meeting dedicated to the memory of Alan Hunt. The Messiah finished with 12 points, the same as Birmingham's Jason Lyons (a former heathen Tiger himself), but won a race off.

First day of the season , i'm like a 5 year old on Christmas morning . Paulco - good luck with the new season. It's almost certainly going to be better than 2008 for Glasgow, and I can only see the Tigers proving those Speedway Star pundits wrong.

Well done to the Tigers on getting that result. I hope it's not that close a score at Belle Vue otherwise we're in a long season in Manchester.

You can't really take these types of meetings as a guide to your chances . Gjedde and Hougaard were both superb , as was Wright . Oostergaard was a bit in and out , while Kasprzak disappointed and Bagar was poor . But it was your team's opening fixture and that will have blown away the cobwebs ahead of your KO Cup meeting at Ipswich . Your number 8 was hugely impressive however . ;D

And how was life in the referee's box?

And how was life in the referee's box? A very interesting experience . I must say i thoroughly enjoyed it though , but it did open my eyes as to the officiating side of speedway - and got me kinda interested in it . We arrived at the track at 12-45 and the first thing was to speak to Alan Dick and make sure all documentation was in place for the season . Then we checked the dressing rooms , i was surprised a referee was expected to do this . A quick check of all the electrics in the box followed before we done a track walk and checked all 13 red lights were functioning . The Grand Monarch had informed me that two Glasgow riders and three BV riders hadn't yet obtained full registration , so these riders were informed and that was quickly sorted out . There was further confrontation in the pits however , which resulted in Chris Morton throwing a bit of a strop , as three helmets belonging to BV riders didn't have any or the correct insurance stamps on them . One of the helmets was actually withdrawn from the rider . Riders were also warned about moving at the start , and were told once the red flags appeared after the warm up laps ( after the parade ) they had to return to the pits and they would be fined if that instruction was ignored . Anyway onto the meeting and it was a pretty easy one for Jim to handle as there were no contentious decisions to make . Heat 2 was pulled back as Hougaard was twitching worse than Amy Winehouse , and from the high vantage you could see him creeping closer and closer to the tapes . Henning Bagar was at it later on , but the race was allowed to continue as he got left . Loads and loads of paperwork involved though , but as i said i thoroughly enjoyed the experience and i've a new appreciation of the refereeing side of things ...........................................well maybe .
