Ok, let's bring in some stats to help settle the issue. Who scored more goals in the final of the World Cup? Okay, who topped the poll for FIFA player of the century? Rossi and Maradona were both controversial figures, of course. Paulo Rossi had only recently returned to football after a two-year ban for being involved in a betting scandal in 1982 - his inclusion in the Azzuri squad was the subject of much debate in Italy, although the debate was somewhat mitigated by six goals and a third world cup for Italy.

Argentina were a disgrace throughout the whole 1990 tournament, their disciplinary record was truly shocking, their tactics were just to maim the opposition to get through. While the diving antics of Messrs Voller and Klinsmann were an example of sporting conduct to which everyone should aspire. Well, not quite, but against Argentina, they weren't diving, the Argies were fouling them. Argentina's disciplinary record during the 1990 competition was so bad that they were only just able to put out a full team for the final. And the semi-final against Italy was the nastiest, dirtiest match of football I've ever seen. While I'm no big footie fan, I did watch a lot of the World Cup tournaments of 1982, 1986 and 1990 (in the days where football had some integrity and wasn't completely controlled by money).

I take it you missed the Italy versus Argentina game in 1982 when Claudio Gentile brutally kicked Maradona out of the game? But, in 1990, that was never ever, not ever, a penalty kick. To be sure, a mediocre Argentine side was playing for penalties and were an inferior side, but it was shocking antics from the Germans.
