It looked good on paper, but once again the Comets have suffered a pre-season blow. Last season they lost Craig Branney following a crash at the Telford meeting and this time around they've lost poor Adam Roynon. Although a replacement for the young fellow will probably not be the upper most consideration for the Derwent Park hierarchy at the minute, time is marching on and the options look limited.

The Weirdity in Barbaria perhaps .

I think His Holiness the Weirdity's average would be too high for the Comets, since I don't think it was far off being seven in 2007. Aside from which, I don't think the Babas are sophisticated enough to appreciate such unadulterated genius.

And the Comets have signed Andre Compton . Apparently Tom Hedley has having work permit problems , so has been hastily dropped to fit Compton in under the points limit . This is madness beyond belief from Denham as ok they will have the lions share of race winners in every meeting , but with Charles Wright , John Branney ( who will now be in the main body of the team ;D) Richard Lawson and another 3 point man - where are the heat advantages coming from ? And they are extremely vulnerable in heats 2,8and 14 .

And they are extremely vulnerable in heats 2, 8 and 14 . Again. The same as last year. And what about when Rymel goes missing? Not many points from Rider Replacement, especially if Rymel can't keep his form from last season going and slips to third in the averages behind Doolan and the Greater Compton.

I know they were struggling to replace the unfortunate Roynon , but this makes no sense whatsoever .

I agree. It places huge strain on the top guys, who can't afford to have a single mishap during a meeting. And last season they did, at least, have the potential of Joe Haines. This season what have they got? The pressure on Lawson to produce instant results will be high as well.

What an odd looking side. They will be a nightmare to ride against, but will also slip to some embarrasing defeats from time to time.

And the Comets sign Luke Priest to fill the vacant reserve spot . Blimey Charles Wright , John Branney , Luke Priest and Richard Lawson - you can't honestly see that quartet scoring anymore than 9 or 10 between them at the most . Which means the three big guns will be under pressure to score at least a combined 36 to win meetings . I can see a very different Comets side coming to the tapes by the time the Premier League starts .

The Workington team looks a bit like a disaster at the minute. And if Rymel's form slips and he slides below the Greater Compton in their averages, things will look even worse when he goes missing and all they have is Rider Replacement. That'll mean one ride for Compton and the rest spread between the hapless quartet mentioned by paulco. I can see the Monarchs winning there in April.
