From IOW press release:
Title chasing Somerset Rebels ended the Wightlink Islanders proud unbeaten home record in 2008 last night with a 49-41 victory at the Wave 105 Smallbrook stadium.
And in a meeting sponsored by Plumbing Trade Supplies of Newport, the Wightlink islanders cause was not helped firstly by the fact that they had been in action at Newcastle the night before, nor the fact that popular Polish star Krzysztof Stojanowski was injured in a heavy crash during the first attempt to stage heat 9 and was unable to take any further part in proceedings.
He and Somerset's German racer Matthias Kroger clashed as the entered the first bend and the race was immediately stopped by referee Paul Carrington who ordered a re-start with all four riders.
However "Stoj" suffered damage to his coccyx, was immediately advised to go to hospital for further assessment and with his exit from the meeting, any hope Islanders skipper Jason Bunyan and his side had of making it 15 home wins out of 15 effectively disappeared.
Somerset arrived on the island knowing that they simply had to win the match, and their away match at Birmingham tonight too to climb above Edinburgh at the top of the league table and, by so doing, heap pressure on the Scottish side to win at Glasgow in their final match on October 12.
Led by ex-Islander Jason Doyle, Somerset were clearly 'on a mission' from the off last night and the Wightlink Islanders struggled to contain them from the off and it has to be said that the west country side ultimately deserved their victory.
"We could point to the fact that we were a little jaded after having been in action at Newcastle the night before," commented Wightlink Islanders co-promoter Dave Pavitt, "and the fact that we lost the services of "Stoj" after he'd taken just two rides but full credit to Somerset as quite simply they rode better than us tonight.
"It's disappointing to have lost our unbeaten home record but there's nothing we can do about it now and we must now look ahead to the Young Shield competition and focus our efforts on trying to win that and end the season on a high."
Final Score Last Night: Wightlink Islanders 41 Somerset Rebels 49
(Premier League)
IOW scorers: Jason Bunyan 11+1, Cory Gathercole 4+1, Krzysztof Stojanowski 3+2, Paul Fry 9, Glen Phillips 6, Andrew Bargh 5+2, Richard Sweetman 3+1.
