WEYMOUTH WILDCATS 61 OXFORD TFSUCCESS.COM CHEETAHS 32
(Challenge)
In this match, the all-round strength of the Weymouth Wildcats – one of the favourites to win the 2008 Conference League – proved too much for an Oxford side depleted through unavailability and injury.
However, the TFSuccess.com Cheetahs continued to battle right up until the final lap of Heat 15, when Kyle Hughes blasted around the outside to pip Lee Smart for second place.
The Wildcats got off to a perfect start with 5-1s in the opening two races.
But Luke Priest then got an excellent run on the outside on the opening half-lap of Heat 3 to shoot around Matt Wright and collect a race win for the Cheetahs.
Hughes resisted pressure from Jay Herne to win Heat 4, as an Oxford took the chequered flag for the second successive race.
In Heat 5, Dean Felton battled around Smart on the opening bends to follow home race-winner Wright, to restrict the Wildcats to a 4-2.
Ten points behind, Oxford team manager Nick Andrews wasted no time in introducing Hughes as a tactical ride in Heat 6 and the move worked a treat. Hughes and Harland Cook flew into the lead and an 8-1 looked a distinct possibility.
However, Karl Mason hunted down Cook and charged around him off the final bend to snatch second place. Nevertheless, the 7-2 to the Cheetahs reduced the deficit to just five points.
A lively Heat 7 saw Priest finish second between the Wildcats pair of Herne (first) and Brendan Johnson (third), before the Wildcats tightened their grip on proceedings with a 5-1 for Mason & Kyle Newman ahead of Cook & Matt Bates in Heat 8.
A tight first bend in Heat 9 saw Cook take a nasty tumble. He was able to take his place in the re-run, where the race was allowed to continue despite a ragged start. Hughes was left in third and unable to overhaul Smart and Wright, as the Wildcats took a second successive 5-1.
After a 4-2 to Weymouth in Heat 10, the following race (Heat 11) saw an opening lap tussle between Johnson and Felton for second place. Felton moved too wide on the third bend and took a tumble, and team-mate Richard Andrews came through into third place, as the Wildcats took another 5-1.
Smart won Heat 12, while second-place Priest fended off the attentions of Newman. On the first bend of the final lap, Newman overcooked it and slid off, allowing Cook (on a stricken machine) to take third place.
Herne headed home Hughes in Heat 13, with Bargh passing Felton on the opening lap to take third.
Wright and Johnson collected a 5-1 for the Wildcats in Heat 14 ahead of an off-colour Terry Day, with Johnson surviving a hairy moment on the third bend when he bounced off the fence.
Herne & Smart trapped in Heat 15, with fourth-placed Priest falling and remounting on the opening lap.
Hughes refused to give up the chase of the Weymouth pair and went for the big handful around the outside. The Chippenham-based youngster was rewarded, when he shot around Smart on the opening bend of the final lap to grab second place and take his personal tally for the evening to an excellent 14 points.
