Woo-hoo, it's been a while since I've added a brand new match report:
Monday, August 11
OXFORD TFSUCCESS.COM CHEETAHS 43 WIMBLEDON DONS 50
(Challenge - at Reading)
The Oxford TFSuccess.com Cheetahs may have lost this meeting - but the result was secondary to seeing the team back in action.
It was also very encouraging to see a crowd of around 700 in attendance.
The Cheetahs got off to an excellent start in Heat 1 with a 5-1 from Jamie Courtney and 16-year-old Brendan Johnson, with the latter resisting pressure from Mark Burrows.
Dons hit back with a 5-1 of their own in Heat 2 courtesy of Lee Strudwick and Aaron Baseby over Adam Wrathall and Marc Andrews.
But Kyle Hughes & Ben Hopwood then pulled Oxford back in front with a 4-2 in Heat 3, with Hopwood overhauling Matt Wright for third place on the opening lap.
The Dons levelled matters once more in Heat 4, before Hughes led home Burrows & Terry Day in Heat 5 for his second race win of the evening.
Heat 6 saw an excellent tussle for the lead between Jay Herne & Johnson. Johnson burst around Herne on the opening lap, but Herne stayed in contention and flew around the youngster on the final bend to take the chequered flag.
Wimbledon pressed ahead with back-to-back 5-1s in Heats 7 & 8, and then Herne and Burrows won the following two races to keep the Dons eight points in front.
Sam Martin was the early leader of Heat 11, but Burrows burst around him around two laps to move Wimbledon 38-28 ahead.
Hughes was nominated as a tactical ride in Heat 12. A fine battle developed between him and Strudwick, with Hughes charging under his opponent after a lap, only for Strudwick to regain the advantage on the back straight of the second lap.
Strudwick still had a narrow lead when he suffered an engine on the final bend of lap 3, and a grateful Hughes nipped through for the win, as the Cheetahs reduced the gap to five points courtesy of a 7-2.
But a 5-1 from Burrows & Herne in Heat 13 then clinched the match for the Dons.
After a 4-2 to Wimbledon in Heat 14, the Cheetahs took a consolation 5-1 in Heat 15.
Hughes end up as Oxford's top scorer with a fantastic 17-point haul and fully deserved to win the Rider Of The Night, picking up a Nintendo Wii from team sponsors TFSuccess.com
