Press release:
The Wightlink Islanders management have moved quickly to plug the gap in their side left by the injury to key second string Cory Gathercole by signing his fellow countryman, teenager Richard Sweetman who jetted into this country earlier this week. And providing all the formalities are completed, he will make his UK debut for us in next Tuesday's home Premier League match against Berwick. Gathercole broke bones in his left hand when he crashed in his opening ride in last week's home win over Scunthorpe and underwent an operation last Saturday to pin them Doctors have indicated to him that he'll be sidelined for at least a month. Faced with that fact the Islanders bosses swiftly decided to draft in a temporary 28 day replacement as permitted by the regulations and quickly decided that 17 years old Sweetman was the ideal man to undertake that role. "Like many other promotions we have been monitoring Richard's progress closely for some time," said Islanders' Dave Pavitt, "and when it became apparent that Cory's injury was going to be out for a month or so, we quickly put in motion moves to sign him as his a temporary replacement and to complete the necessary formalities. "This really is an ideal opportunity for us to take a good look at a young rider who is so highly rated and for Richard himself to not only get accustomed to British conditions but to show everyone what he can do."
