I have high hopes for Indianapolis, after all it’s got a proven track record for incidents. Last year’s race was won by Michael Schumacher – indeed, in the seven previous races that have been held there since the US GP returned to the schedule, only once has a Ferrari not one this race, and that was Mika Hakkinen in the McLaren in 2001.
A year ago we saw Juan Pablo Montoya take out four other drivers at the start of the race, including his team mate, Raikkonen (nice move, Juan Pablo); the previous year saw the tyre farce which meant only six Bridgestone running cars contested the race, and the year before that was when Ralf Schumacher’s rear tyre failure on the Williams sent him into the wall at high speed and fractured his spine. Not only was it a horrific accident, but Michael had to concentrate on picking through the wreckage behind the safety car whilst watching his brother being treated by the medical team.
Unfortunately I can’t see Ferrari winning this one, however Alonso doesn’t have a good track record here, having finished only one of the five races he has taken part in – last year he came 5th. Past form means nothing for Massa because he doesn’t have the car underneath him to win this one. Ferrari need to seriously buck up their ideas if they have any hope of reigning in the McLarens, and I fear this will be a two horse race.
Heidfeld and Wurz will be looking for a repeat of their good performance in Canada, and I’m hoping Kovalainen is going to start showing some form, because I’m sure he has it in him.
Kubica has said he wants to take part this weekend, but will he be fit enough, and will Davidson get over “beaver fever” and get the car to the finish? Will Button be able to get off the line, will Webber retire and will DC finally crack a smile? Apart from Hamilton there hasn’t been much for us Brits to cheer, and they are in danger of disappearing under a veil of anonymity. Come on lads – give us something to talk about.
