Gollob was injured after Bydgoszcz '99 not before it. Hmmm....maybe my drunken brain is failing me....Thought it was 99 he had the car crash the week before the GP...was that 2001?

HenryW, no the car crash came in 2000, a year in which Gollob was not a contender for the World Championship (his decision to ask Blomfeldt to help in 2000 backfired, and Gollob turned back to preparing his own bikes in 2001). In 1999, picked up an injury a week before the final round in Vojens. But he was already crumbling under the pressure, with sub-standard performances at Coventry & Bydgoszcz which happened before the injury. And he went into Bydgoszcz in 2001, trailing Rickardsson by just 11 points with two rounds remaining. A win in Bydgoszcz would have taken the series down to the wire, but while Rickardsson finished second in the meeting, Gollob could only score a measly ninth. The two times Gollob has rode at Bydgoszcz with genuine world championship aspirations he has finished fifth and ninth respectively. EDIT: HenryW, and when you're sobered up this morning, any chance you could pick the winner of the FOTW, old chap? I don't mind people having a couple of extra days to decide, but you are now over a week overdue.

I long for the day we see a "new" world champion, and in that I mean someone who isn't Crump, Pedersen or even Hancock. But it wouldn't surprise me to see Nicki back to form in 2010 and Crump fading again.

Crump has been the best rider in the world and to lose it simply because of an injury would be cruel.

We'll never know, of course, how many world titles Gollob would've won had the one-off world final remained - but venue location would surely have seen at least three finals staged in his homeland during his career and, as we see year after year, he's nigh on unstoppable at Bydgoszcz. You can't just look at titles won now that it's a GP series - you also have to look at GP wins to determine the merit of the rider. Or are you seriously claiming that Loram is better than Gollob? I don't think even Loram's greatest fan would claim that. Most sane people certainly wouldn't. I would not suggest Loram was a better rider than Gollob, but then again i don't believe Crump and Pedersen are better than him either, the fact remains however that World titles are ultimately how one is judged, and i totally refuse to accept that GP wins determine the merit of a rider, would anyone seriously suggest that if Dugard had ridden in 60 GP's he would have won 20 ? truth is GP wins are often down to luck and the most likely winner often has a greater target in his sights. If Gollob was British and speedway a major sport he would get crucified in the press for his lack of success and his number of GP wins would prove more detrimental than good.

Whilst I agree Crump is indeed a worthy champion, I also acknowledge that sport is cruel and there are no deserving winners but the actual winners.
