EDINBURGH have moved to allay fears that the immediate future of the Monarchs at Armadale could be under threat.
Local councillor Stuart Borrowman announced on Monday evening that stadium owners have started a planning process to turn the site into a residential development.
Billy Cochrane Jnr, part of the father and son company who own the stadium, said: “We are looking to continue the operation of the stadium into the medium to long term. Speedway is about to start its twentieth season at the stadium and we hope that we will all be here in ten years time to celebrate the thirtieth.
“However, there are certain things going on in West Lothian planning at the moment that required us to protect our investment. That's what we are trying to do. There is no house builder lined up to start laying foundations.”

EDINBURGH star Ryan Fisher has secured the services of American colleague Billy Janniro, photo, for his Testimonial at Armadale on June 3.
The duo were team-mates at Coventry in their early days of Elite League racing, but Janniro has not raced in the UK since leaving Brandon at the end of the 2008 season although he still competes in the States.
Fisher said: “Of all the riders I want in my meeting, Billy is the number one that I wanted to be there because we have been so close.
“Billy signed for Coventry the year before I did, and when I went there we stayed together for a while. We had also raced together when we were kids. I’m very pleased that he’s coming to my meeting and I think he will still be very good for the fans to watch.”Attachments:

FOn the SGB website: EDINBURGH have announced the signing of Mark Riss – the elder brother of current Monarchs star Erik.
The German is set to join the club with immediate effect subject to BSPA approval, with Australian rider Jye Etheridge making way after scoring only nine points in 40 rides.
Edinburgh boss John Campbell said: “When we first approached the Riss boys we were told that Mark was initially the better rider, although that is not the case now as Erik has had 50 meetings in the UK.
“However, Mark will have the help of Erik who has learnt so much about racing in the UK over the last year. Both Erik and Kevin Wolbert were keen to have Mark with us.
“I’ll do all I can to get Jye to a track that may better suit his style but the new rules this season mean that he is still lumbered with an average of five.”

From the SGB website::: ::::
EDINBURGH have announced a change for the Premier League Pairs at Somerset on Friday with Sam Masters now to be partnered by Ryan Fisher.
The American comes in because Kevin Wolbert has been ruled out after crashing in Germany on Sunday, although his absence is not likely to be long-term.
Wolbert said: “I did want to do the Pairs because I need to improve my record in that meeting!
“It is also important that I am ready for the league matches next week and I think Sam and Ryan can do well in the Pairs. So I am sorry not to be seeing the fans this week.”
The Monarchs are the second club to make a change at the Oaktree Arena, as Sheffield have replaced the injured Jason Garrity with Kyle Howarth.

AMERICAN racer Ricky Wells has signed for Edinburgh for the 2017 SGB Championship campaign.
After three years with Workington in the second tier, the 25-year-old will now link up with the Armadale outfit in a move he has described as "overdue".
Said Wells: "I think I should have been at Edinburgh a couple of years ago but it's happened now.
"I had a good time at Workington, no complaints there, sure it’s a bit of a shame to leave but once I sorted a deal out with Edinburgh I was very excited and I’m looking forward to the start of the season now."

AUSTRALIAN star Sam Masters will be back to lead Edinburgh in the 2017 SGB Championship campaign.
Masters will be going into his fourth season at Armadale, taking over as captain this year after being part of two title-winning Monarchs teams.
He said: “Last season was a difficult one mainly due to the weather we had, and that made it difficult to get the team going as I wanted. I want to put that right next summer.
“I’m very pleased we have Ricky Wells in the side now, I get along with him and I’m sure we will ride well together. As he said, we should be strong in the big heats.
“I’ve got a good idea what the rest of the side will be and I’m sure we can work on all the boys and get the best out of them. That’s what makes team speedway enjoyable.

From the SGB website: :::: EDINBURGH have announced the signing of Max Clegg for a third season at Armadale in 2017.
Clegg won the British Under-19 and National League Riders’ Championships during a four-day spell in September, and is now set to focus on racing in the top two divisions.
He said: “I felt I made a lot of progression last season. I’m really glad to be back and I think I can progress more.
“I can definitely move forward and increase my average in both the Premiership and Championship. I think it’s possible, I’ve just got to do better on the away tracks. That has always been my downfall but I’m determined to put that right.
“I know everyone in the team well because I have ridden with Ricky Wells at Wolverhampton, he’s really good there.”Attachments:
