Ht 9 of the PB v Lakeside KO Cup meeting (19.06.08). Does anyone have the winning time for it please? That's the night my car broke down after the meeting Kev H has my programme. In fact he has all the details of all meetings so he is always going to be able to answer these questions, unless we get in there whilst he is at work or sleeping

Did Britain only have only league in 1965? Schumi, yes. The British League was the only league from 1965 to 1967. British League Division Two started in 1968, before being renamed the New National League in 1975 and the National League in 1976.

And before that it was the National and Provincial leagues? And the EL was first introduced in 1997? Just checking I have some facts right.

And before that it was the National and Provincial leagues? And the EL was first introduced in 1997? Just checking I have some facts right. Schumi, The National League operated with up with three divisions in the post-war boom. However, by 1957 it was down to a single division. The only other league operating at this point was the Southern Area League (SAL), a semi-professional league, by this didn't get to the tapes in 1958. In 1958, there was only a National League of nine teams, arguabaly British Speedway's lowest ever ebb. The SAL returned in 1959, but was replaced by a new league in 1960 - the Provincial League. By 1964, the National League was floundering with 7 teams, whilst the Provincial League had 12 teams. They amalgamated to form a 18-team British League in 1965. A second divsion of the British League started in 1968. British Speedway enjoyed a new boom - by 1978, there were 39 teams (19 in the British League, 20 in the National League as it was called by now). However, peace and harmony did not exist between the two leagues, with completely different managament committees for the two leagues. This changed in 1991, as the two leagues came back together and they were known as British League Divisions One & Two once more. A third divsion started in 1994, later to be renamed the Conference League. In the meantime, the top two leagues amalgamated into a single 21-strong Premier League in 1995. This only lasted for two years, before the top clubs broke away to form the Elite League. From 1997 onwards, the same three-league structure has existed.

Thanks again, genghis. Should have said, I'm only working on the top two leagues for each country at the moment, but was checking I hadn't missed anything out so far.

However, peace and harmony did not exist between the two leagues, with completely different managament committees for the two leagues. The former BL Second Division teams largely broke away to form the New National League in (I think) 1975. This was renamed the National League the following year. A third divsion started in 1994, later to be renamed the Conference League. It started as BL Division Three in 1994, was called the British Academy League in 1995. British Conference League in 1996, British Amateur League in 1997, and then back to the British Conference League from 1998 until 2008. This only lasted for two years, before the top clubs broke away to form the Elite League. I'm not sure it was the top teams that broke away. I think it was the less well off teams in the combined BPL that threatened to do so unless they could run at a more cost effective level. Didn't they even go as far as to decide to re-create the National League?

Unlike Peter Oakes, who probably still thinks that the 2009 SWC final is going to be at Brandon.
