The bulldozers have moved onto the Smallmead site. Quite sad in one way to see our old dump finally flattened, but at least I won't have to drive past an empty derelict stadium each day now. Oh Wacks I know what you mean as we have experienced similar a few times in the past and look to be set to possibly being homeless again Also missing not meeting up with you this season. I suppose you coming to Rye House for our KOC semi is too much to ask of you?

STADIUM BOSSES GIVEN JUNE 2010 DEADLINEFriday, August 28, 2009 READING stadium bosses have been given a deadline of summer next year for work to start on their new stadium. The Racers had their old Smallmead Stadium bulldozed last week and since vacating it and the end of last October, forcing them to sit out the 2009 season, they have been anxiously waiting for news on their proposed new home in Island Road. Stadia UK (Gaming International) had earlier this year promised that work on the new site would start in July, but that date has now passed and the ground remains untouched. And now Reading Borough Council have this week said they have given them a deadline of June 2010 to be on site and commencing work, otherwise the whole situation will be fully reviewed. Club spokesman Andy Povey said: “The current global economic situation obviously hasn’t helped, but we understand that Stadia UK are continuing to seek financial backing for the project. “We’ve been waiting for months for news and I was hoping that last week’s sad demolition of the stadium would at least provoke some sort of reaction from somewhere. At least that has been achieved, although obviously it’s not quite the news we would have hoped for. “Stadia UK still appear to be fully-committed to delivering a new speedway and greyhound stadium in Reading, but it’s just a question of finances. “The Racers being ready for the 2010 season next March looks an almost non-starter now, but hopefully something can be sorted out in time for the 2011 campaign. “As tenants of the eventual new stadium there is very little the club can do, but sit and wait. However, if Stadia UK isn’t able to go ahead with it, then hopefully there will be other parties who could put together a plan.” www.readingspeedway.com/news.php?extend.1679

Stadia UK are never going to build a new stadium in the town, our only hope is that Reading Borough Council tell them to piss off and some other interested party comes in and develops a stadium.

Wacks - I agree. The sooner Stadia UK bugger off out of the equation the better. Maybe the council should have ordered that the old stadium couldn't be demolished until the new one was built. Now the Racers are left with nothing.

Maybe the council should have ordered that the old stadium couldn't be demolished until the new one was built. I think it's obviously they wanted the perceived eyesore out of the way, as it was incongruous with the swankly business park built around it. They had to be seen to be doing the right thing, but I suspect they knew Stadia UK would never actually build anything.

I don't think the council gave a flying turd what people thought of the state of the stadium, the business park is privately owned as is most of the land around the area now. But they would have been interested in getting their hands on the readies on offer for the site.

Oh well, at least you can still make out the shape of the track. Looks like it would be a bit grippier than we had in previous years too. In a way I'm kind of glad smallmead has gone, I used to drive past it 5 days a week watching it fall further into disrepair was worse than seeing it as wasteland.

I appear to be hearing rumours of men in yellow jackets and hard hats along with some money being made available...... I keep my fingers crossed for Reading even though I'm moving back East in a few weeks to return to the side of the lake, from whence I came..... possibly akin to going over the Berlin Wall to the East ;D Sorry for my defection Wacks but blame the (soon to be ex) wife Pip

Have heard of some rumours too Pip but not holding my breath just yet. Tsk, defection in what could be our hour of need, oh well defecting to the East in this instance isnt' too bad an option when you consider what's West of us!
