Don't get me wrong Bryn, I was not complaining about the price or quality at all, well apart from the fact my kids have started to take an interest this season and want to fill in a race card - plus has the added bonus that they are so much better behaved but could not jusitfy paying out £6 (£8 when eldest decides he wants to spend time with his mother) in programmes each week, hence my suggestion on the Ippo site about producing a child race sheet (which could be sold to them on entry when they pay to enter so no silly business with kids going to teh programme seller and buying one supposedly for a child) and selling for maybe 50p. Children are afterall, not interested in sponsors or the like and just want to copy what the adults are doing and filling in the race scores. I have always been a supporter of purchasing a programme and it is only this season when pennies have been tighter that I have resorted on a couple of occasions to printing one out for me too. And believe it or not.... I was one of those who didn't have a clue about doing my own either until someone gave me an idiots guide on how to do it! Don't worry Tiddles, as a Father myself I fully sympathise with the situation you face! Mind you my daughter is old enough to buy her own ruddy programme nowadays!

You forget that footie clubs get paid a load by big companies (jewellers, estate agents, breweries etc.) to print their advertisements in the programmes so they can afford to print glossy programmes Speedway gets plumbing, double glazing, painting and decorating etc so therefore cant afford to print bumper programmes every week. You'd be surprised at the lack of advertising in the Newcastle United programme. Leaving aside advertising for sponsors, such as Barclays, Northern Rock, Adidas and Carling, which is presumably part and parcel of the sponsorship, and advertising for club enterprises, there's hardly any.

But Norther Rock, Adidas, Carling are all big enough sponsors to cover for the others which are missing.
Their adverts alone will cover a large sum of the printing costs. It's the same for the Boro with Garmin, Carlsberg and the estate agent (cant remember the name).

But all those advertisors are primarily sponsors of the club - the adverts are part of the sponsorship. For example, Barclays are sponsors of the Premier League and not specifically Newcastle United.

But the others you mention will be paying extra for sponsorship or if not the club will be paying them less to use their product so the companies can have some programme space. There was an article in our local paper sometime last year which detailed the time and effort that goes into making the Boro programme (when we won programme of the year)

Coventry which I got today is the best ever since I have been following Speedway. A proper programme with not many ad's.

Here is a scan of the front cover from Belle Vue's 2008 Programmer. Each cover has a different legend on it as the idea was to make them collectable in the clubs 80th Anniversary Year. Let's have a look at last nights programme from the Lakeside Meeting. Peter Craven on the front cover which is classed as page 1. Page 2 has a split advert for Rock Oil and Manchester Safety Services. Page 3 has contents on it, names of officials, web address, roll of honour and the important notice about reserving the right to change the programme. Page 4 has Mort's Thoughts. Page 5 has a couple of photos on it (one of Bobby Ksiezak and David Gordon whilst the other is of Kevan Platts and Ben Taylor). Page 6 has Captain's Piece (written by Joe Screen but not sure by who in the future) and the Junior Vue section for the kids. Page 7 has four adverts on it. Page 8 has 2 adverts on it. Page 9 has the thoughts of Gordon Pairman and David Gordon. Pages 10 and 11 are just adverts. Page 12 has the down memory lane column whilst page 13 has the bit on the slide column. Pages 14 and 15 feature an article regarding the legend who is depicted on the front cover. Pages 16 and 17 are the racecard. Page 18 is the Colts page and has their racecard on it. Page 19 has Richard Frost's article. Page 20 has anoraknaphobia column (just random speedway related blabber). Page 21 is adverts. Pages 22 and 23 tell us about the visiting team. Page 24 has snippets of news from the other EL tracks. Page 25 has 1 photo and 1 advert. Page 26 adverts. Page 27 has 2 adverts and Nigel Pearsons story of the week which is usually about 3 weeks old. Page 28 has the results and league table. Page 29 has the Aces riders averages on it and 1 advert. Page 30 has a puzzle page and 1 photo. Page 31 is an advert for speedway on sky whilst the back cover is an advert for the main team sponsor One51. I can't be arsed counting the number of pages that are solely adverts but this years programme is full colour and the management backed down on charging £2.50.

I agree, Coventry's programme is by far the best, second Lakeside (that is this year, could be others who I have yet to visit this year) Wycombe Wanderers have a good programme.
