Yes, that was all the other Weslake riders. But who says Sigalos wouldn't have been a different case? He was in the form of his life in the early part of 1984 - he was absolutely awesome in the England v USA matches shown on the TV. He could have been World Champion that year. Early part of the season didn't mean a thing - the world title wasn't handed out until August-September. Look, had Dave Jessup been injured in the early part of 1980 and had his career wrecked, the likes of you would be spouting off today about how Jessup would "probably" have been world champion. But he didn't get injured and nor did he ever become world champion. Sigalos could've been world champion in 1984, but it's highly unlikely he would've been.

Okay, would Sigalos have been world champion if Grands Prix had been around?
Edit:
Anyone who just heard a stranged cry around the Oxford area can rest assured that was genghis choking at the prospect, because the gospel according to genghis is that Nielsen would've won every world championship from 1983 until 1989 in a Grands Prix world.

Okay, would Sigalos have been world champion if Grands Prix had been around? Very difficult one to answer. I'm inclined to think that the winners from 1981 would have been: 1981: Penhall. 1982: Penhall again. 1983: Wide open. Nielsen, Sigalos, Lee, Gundersen or - as an outsider - Carter. 1984: Probably Gundersen , but maybe Nielsen or, if not injured, Sigalos. Then from 1985 to 1991 Nielsen would have been hard to anyone to match over a GP series (Erik would have won as many rounds, but GP success is all down to consistency - and Hans was, arguably, the most consistent rider of all-time). You know, Sigalos may have won the GP series, had it been around in 1983. It would have been him or Nielsen, I reckon.

Sub - actually the Genghis gospel reads that Gundersen could have triumphed in an 1984 GP series, but Nielsen's incredible consistency at a World level between 1985 and 1991 would have made him a very hard man to beat during that period, especially if you're thinking along the lines of the current 11-round series. Even if you won 4 or 5 rounds, how would you stop a guy who would be reaching every final? But, of course, it's completely hypothetical. I've settle for the fact that, with his 22 World Championship Gold Medals, Hans Nielsen is (statistically at least) the most successful speedway rider of all-time.

The gospel has changed since last we argued on this matter. As I recall, Sigalos hardly entered your thoughts for 1983.

Your memory is getting dodgy in your old age. EDIT: Cue Subedei's search through all 1861 of my posts. ;D ;D FURTHER EDIT: He must still be going. No doubt he'll find it eventually.

That's good. Anyway, the previous discussion was on the BSF, so it's probably somewhere in an archive.

For what its worth i think Sigalos would definately have been a World Champion, and contributed to more diluted success for Gundersen and Nielsen, along with Carter and Lee, but alas its all conjecture now. 3 World class competitors who knew how to win big meetings were lost in a short space of time. Just below these i would place Sanders twice a World Final rostrum occupent.
