This was my teenage era and perhaps the decade i look back on with most fondness . Start of the decade Tigers are racing in the old division one at Hampden Park . It used to have the most surreal atmosphere with the entire crowd situated in the main stand while the rest of the huge stadium was empty . We had Charlie Monk , Jimmy Mac and Bobby Beaton was just breaking through . Saw Ivan Mauger ride in the nordic-british final at Hampden with a plaster cast on his right leg . The one really sad sight that sticks out in my memory was the death on track of Svein Kassa . Who died when landing on the back of his neck after clipping Martin Ashby's back wheel . After Hampden it was off to Coatbridge with the license being swapped with Hull taking them into the top league and us into the New National League . This part of our history was graced on track by the likes of Brian Collins , Merve Janke , Mick McKeon and 15 year old Mitch Shirra . We ended the decade at the first Blantyre track - which i loved - and that track saw the emergence of the greatest ever Tiger - Super Steve Lawson .

Paulco,
Blimey, you're older than I thought, I imagined you were in your twenties.
Slighltly from the wrong period, but I remember well Glasgow's visit to Oxford in 1983. "Mr. National League" Steve Lawson and Jim McMillan were in awesome form, and Lawson - who had looked completely untroubled all night - just needed to win the final race to clinch victory for the Tigers.
But Ian Clark and Nigel Sparshott got out in front, and then combined to keep Lawson behind, as the Cheetahs snatched a two-point win, much to the delight of the home fans.
All the best Rob

As we can see, even the less than great Martin McKinna had his moments for the heathen Tigers. McMillan had dropped down from British League Belle Vue to join the Tigers, who had a very strong heat leader trio for 1983, until Kenny McKinna went in the opposite direction to McMillan mid-season. McMillan ended the season atop the Glasgow averages and then buggered off to join the cruel, crazy town, where he would end his riding days.

I should really have credited it. I was looking for something else and came across this result. It comes from the Speedway Star, dated August 6th, 1983. Unfortunately, the Speedway Star gave scorers in descending order, so I've had to guess a little at the riding order of the teams. And they don't give forenames for the riders, so I've left a few of Oxford's blank - unless you can help out.

Come on paulco, young DLT put out some very weak teams during his time as promoter of the Tigers. Lawson often held them together season after season. Sadly the above is a true statement . And ironically Super Stevie Lawson chose to hang up his leathers after the 1992 season . And of course in 1993 the Tigers won the league and cup double , and repeated that feat in 1994 . Stevie Lawson's leathers and bike are permenantly on view in the Glasgow Transport Museum ;D

Mrs. Elizabeth Taylor - where did she promote? Was it Berwick? All the best Rob She did indeed. Mrs Taylor and her husband founded the Berwick Bandits and she continued to promote the club with son Kenny after her husband passed away. Eventually, others invested in the club and it became a partnership, with the hard-boiled fisherman Davie Fairbairn at the helm. And David L Thompson promoted at Glasgow during the mid-1980s.

Sub, Looking at their heats, Steve "The Rocket" Crockett (renowned for rearing and falling off at the tapes!) is No. 2 for Oxford, Wayne Jackson is No. 6 and Mark Summerfield is No. 7. All the best Rob I'll modify the scorecard accordingly. Of course, Oxford went British League for 1984 and landed themselves a day in court when Graham Drury sued them for breaking his three year contract. Drury won and was awarded something like £12,000 for his trouble.

I was actually looking for Newcastle's win at Oxford that season, when Messrs Owen and Hunter both raced to paid 21-pointers, but it must be around the time of the world final and I seem to have misplaced those issues.
