Then I, in my own cynical way, would read 'whoops, sorry, it didn't actually happen' into that.

New evidence has come to light from the son of Dudley McKean who was racing that night and rode in the re-run of the race He has posted this on the history forum. "it's a late responce but Dud McKean is my dad. after reading the questions i askedc his version. he said he was watching from the infield at the spot the accident occered. george's motor siezed and peter had nowhere to go, we know the result of that. as to the handicap, peter craven had been off scratch as with the previous rides he allowed the others to trap and would jump as they reached the first corner. he apparently did the same in this heat but George was going alright and he took some catching. when he caught George this is when his motor died. Dad has a very clear recollection of this event and has repeated the story to me several times in the past. i doubt anyone had a more clear view of the event. Colin McKean" So if that is correct it is significant in the Scratch/Handicap debate. PC started with them all in line at the tapes but was giving them a head start by not trapping until the others got to the first corner. Now to me that means in effect that no one is right or no one is wrong about this either. This could be the reason why George mentioned 10 yards in an interview just before he died though. Even so, I would still bet against the likes of Jim Henry even conceding this new information.

Certainly seems to add up, no official handicap but Craven took it upon himself to give the others a head start.
That story makes sense of all the disputes about did he or didn't he.

Yes, I have mooted this in the past that maybe George got a flier. Though it seems a bit more than that now. He was given a flipping head start. Its actually saying though what I believed all along, that if they had left the tapes together there is no way George would/could have been in front of PC with respect to him he was not in PC's class. Also, that the Edinburgh faithful and Hunters fans seemingly since that meeting have tried to deny that as a possibility, and that Hunter was on fire that night.... It appears now we are finally getting at the truth....

I have recently completed a 'make over' for my Peter Craven tribute web site at long last. Its not quite finished, but I am getting there. Peter also deserved his own domain name. www.peter-craven.co.ukThere is also included a really nice and interesting article by the Australian speedway historian Ross Garrigan, called the 'Wizard in Oz'. It covers the winter of 1959/60 when Peter raced in Rowley Park, Australia. The link direct to that article is as follows: www.jbsportsimages.co.uk/peter_craven/wizard.html
