Unfortunately, this site hasn't got up to "S" yet: www.foes.info/index.htmlBut if no one here can help you, there's an e-mail link for Mike Hunter and he probably knows more about Edinburgh speedway than anyone else, except maybe Merlin.

Brilliant...............cheers once again mate!!! The story goes that when Sitzwohl came to this country Ian Hoskins, the Edinburgh promoter, had the choice of him or another rider (whose name escapes me). He chose Sitzwohl on the basis that he was told he was the Austrian Champion. That he was but the problem was that he was the Austrian Cycle Speedway Champion. He was certainly just about the worst rider ever to ride for Edinburgh. He made one appearance at the White City Glasgow and after his performance (if you pardon the expression) he was told to....err....get on his bike!

That's a fascinating story Merlin, and in some ways justice was probably done, as Young Mr Hoskins pulled a fair few strokes of his own in days gone by. I remember Ian visiting Canterbury when his father was promoter and claiming he'd found and signed an outstanding prospect for the Crusaders whilst in South Africa. We had to wait a few weeks until we saw this superstar in the making, but he was eventually unveiled as Rocky Coutts.........he was truly appalling, and it seems went the same way as Sitzwohl. Interestingly, I see that Sitzwohl scored 1+1 in his appearance for you..........Coutts never even made the team at Canterbury.

Can't remember Alf Devine , was at Coatbridge every Friday in 1974 though i dont remember him . Although i was loved up at the time . I was 15 at the time and Heather Horsburgh and i weren't texting in the scores between races . Anyway i digress - never heard of Devine , but Hughson rings a bell . I'm almost sure he was Scottish , but if he rode at Coatbridge in 1969 he would have been a Monarch .

Cheers Paul, how about Alf Devine and Alex Hughson who both rode for Coatbridge in '74 and '69 respectively? Alex Hughson was Scottish. He eventually went to America where he was in business with Roni Ferguson. I can't say I've ever heard of Alf Devive either.
