Or would that august body that represents those who undertake timing of races at tracks have to recommend that at least the £5.99 special stopwatch available from Argos be used rather than the bog standard £4.99 special? Does this not say everything about how speedway is stuck in a time warp (no pun intended )? Even the corporate kart track on the centre green at Oxford managed to use transponders in conjunction with an timing strip under the start/finish line to get accurate times, so how hard could it be for speedway to do something similar? Would they want to? You still only get 3 points for winning a race in 57.1254678 seconds, same as you would if you won one in 57.2345678 seconds - or am I missing something here? And timewarp? Blimey I would need a week (at least!) to list all the changes that have been tried, some that have stuck, some that haven't in the sport since I saw my first meeting but, when you boil it all down, it's still the same in terms of basics i.e. four riders in a clutch start race mounted on 500cc motorbikes that have a fixed gearing and no brakes, racing over four laps with the winner er..... winning! And one final thing - how do you know those "transponders" things you refer to are totally accurate? ;D

I think I have a picture of both Ove and Peter walking across the center green for that match race Rob prior to being intoduced to the fans. I'll try and dig it out and post it. Nice story that; I might use it on my PC's tribute web site if it is OK with you. Do you have with your Oxford memorabilia any pictures or articles, programme pics etc of PC, you might be able to scan for me too Rob?

Yes, but at this stage times at Oxford were only recorded to 0.1 seconds. So you can get a pretty accurate time by watching and timing the video. Anyway, I timed it twice, just to make sure, and got 56.2 seconds both times. Ghengis you really need a hobby or something. ;D I have got a hobby... speedway. And what's the third best thing about the sport, after the actual racing itself, and the people who attend it. Yes, it's the stats.

And, of course, it's important how fast the riders are going... Bryn, you've been down the pits for more meetings than I've had hot dinners, and what is the question the riders ask more than any other?

As for the memorabilia, I've have a look...

Will the bar be open after the meeting? Is the water in the showers hot? Do you think I ought to change my gearing? (that's one only THEY / their mechanics would really know the answer to!) Are we winning? When am I out next? There's five that immediately spring to mind!

Well there's "fast enough" following a winning ride and "not fast enough" for a non-winning ride in addition to your suggestion for starters Genghis! ;D And besides which NO team manager I know would not make a note of heat times (or get it by use of the pit phone to the officials box link if not hearing it personally) so as to have the answer IF asked!

Exactly - which is why the answer is: "Dunno. Can't here the times down here." ;D ;D Er NO Genghis because you as a team manager would already have the heat winning time (as accurate / inaccurate as it might be but the one given out over the PA) prior to being asked specifically for it by either of your two riders in a race in the pits afterwards and, if you think about it logically the info would only be any real use as a bit of an ego boost to one of your riders who won the race for he would have been going fast enough. So, to be fair, would his partner had they recorded a 5-1 in that particular race but not if he'd finished third or fourth! And furthermore the heat winning time would in NO WAY indicate just how fast even the winner of the race was going would it? Q: "How fast was I going?" A: "58.69secs - doesn't make sense does it? And I've yet to come across an opposing team manager called Einstein who could convert a heat winning time into MPH / KPH in his head in the time between heats for the heat winner and even old Albert in his prime, I'm pretty sure, couldn't have told a second, third or fourth rider home how fast they were going especially without any sort of time (accurate / inaccurate!) for them completing the four laps! ;D Blimey even YOU don't come up with that info on demand! OMG! My head hurts - I need a beer! ;D

Genghis, having a vested interest in what's going on with your signature , the second line from the bottom is interesting. Have you heard something? I rarely read other websites these days.
