Simmons promises changes
Last updated: 01/06/2009 12:00:00
IPSWICH Witches team manager Pete Simmons has confirmed that changes are to be made to the Elite League speedway team.
The Witches are in action against Swindon Robins in the Elite League at Foxhall Stadium tonight (start 7.30pm) trying to erase memories of a dreadful home performance last Thursday.
Beaten 48-45 by bottom of the table Belle Vue in the Knock-Out Cup was the final straw for the Ipswich management, and Simmons revealed that moves have already been made to bring new riders to the club.
Last year's sensation Piotr Swiderski and Ipswich-based skipper Leigh Lanham are the two riders most in danger of losing their places after both have had a disappointing time in 2009.
And if the pair do well tonight it is likely to be too late for the management to alter their minds.
“We had a management meeting after the Belle Vue defeat and telephone calls were made around 10.30pm on Thursday night,” said Simmons.
“We are looking at more than one rider to bring in and we have the names of those we want.
“It takes three days to re-declare your side so we are set to be unchanged tonight, but there is a chance there could be a change or two in the line-up at Swindon on Thursday.
“After that it looks as though we are in for a fortnight's rest and this will give us chance to re-group and then go forward with a re-shuffled team.
“I am not saying that a dramatic performance against Swindon might not bring a reprieve, but it is unlikely as we can't allow things to go on as they have been.
“Gaining points is how riders gain their livelihoods and I sure every team member will give his all against the Robins.”
Simmons labelled the display against Belle Vue as atrocious and added: “It will be tough against Swindon and if we ride as poorly as we did against the Aces we will get murdered.
“This squad looked a solid unit when we put it together last winter and while some have risen to the task and done as requested others have been unable to do so.
“I must ask our fans to keep faith, and we will need their support against the Robins. But to turn things around we have decided that the only way is to bring in new blood.”
Ipswich have won their last six home league meetings, but they will find it difficult to make it seven against a side that includes the ever-dependable and highly skilled Australian Leigh Adams.
Carl Wilkinson takes the doubling up Ipswich berth against while fellow reserve Dawid Stachyra will benefit from a further rest after suffering painful injuries in last Monday's televised defeat Coventry.
A switch to Monday night home meeting is to fit in with Sky Sports, who will be showing the action from the heath tonight live on their satellite television channel.
Tonight's line-ups
Ipswich: J Hampel, L Lanham, T Kroner, D King, P Swiderski, D Stachyra, C Wilkinson.
Swindon: L Adams, S Stead, T McGowan, J Pavlic, M Zagar, K Stojanowski, AN Other

You have to feel sorry for swiderski brought in last year on a low average when no one else wanted him turns out to be one of the riders of the year and saves the ippo season but becausehe's gone back to how he was it looks like he may get dumped no doubt ending his britsh career.

If Coventry have to get rid of Nicholls, can Ipswich fit him back in? Just me wondering, not heard anything.

I would imagine Robert Miskowiak is a prime target for Ipswich, and possibly Martin Smolinski.

I would imagine Robert Miskowiak is a prime target for Ipswich, and possibly Martin Smolinski. I so hope you are wrong about Misko Kev And this: This currently appears on the Robert Miskowiak official website: Misiek ponownie na Wyspach? 10.06.2009. Which (using a Polish translation website) comes out as: Misiek again on the islands? 10.06.2009. Everything indicates that Robert will return to startów on the islands. Misiek does not conceal, that ON at the present moment are led the conversations with one from English clubs, which they tend in the good direction. The principal cause which influenced on the collection that of conversations with the professor conferring a degrees from England is a fact, that presently Robert does not have a too large quantity of startów. How affirms, will depend it on this, in order to drive how best and if will return to the drive on the islands can this have only positive response. Already soon more information

Further confirmation of forthcoming changes slips out of Moscow;- Ipswich Witches have indicated that team changes will be made before the next home Elite League meeting, against the Lakeside Hammers, on June 25th. Witches rider/manager Chris Louis is not revealing at this stage which rider is to be replaced or by whom but has confirmed changes will definitely be made. He has admitted that “By the time we ride our next meeting at home to Lakeside on June 25, there will be at least one new face in the line-up. We will let people know more after the weekend, as we don't want to say too much now. But yes, there will be changes.”Taken from www.ipswichspeedway.com

And Leigh speaks, taken from love speedway:
No work, but you won't get Leigh down
Last updated: 23/06/2009 16:00:00
REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL: Leigh, with daughters Ellie, 3 and Holly, 4 PROFESSIONAL sport can be cruel. One minute you are a hero, the next can be cast aside... out of favour and out of work.
Nothing illustrates this more than Leigh Lanham's recent fall from grace as captain of the Ipswich Witches speedway team. So what does the future hold for Lanham? Mike Bacon met the man to find out.
YOU could quite understand if Leigh Lanham was a bitter man.
Appointed captain of his home-town speedway team, Ipswich Witches, at the start of the 2009 campaign, he now finds himself out of work, released by the Witches management after a bad crash and subsequent poor scores.
Life's not easy. He has two young mouths to feed and a wife to support, no money coming in, and has had to put up with some so-called fans abusing him to his face.
That's no joke. And while Leigh accepts criticism as part of the territory, looking after his young family is more of a concern.
So is he bitter? No he isn't.
“Quite honestly, I'm just disappointed I didn't have time to show Ipswich fans that I could do this,” he said.
“I was under pressure from the start, but it never worried me to be honest. In hindsight I wonder whether I should have taken the captaincy.
“I had enough on my plate to try to score points, but I was happy at the time to take the job on and I didn't let anyone down on that front.”
The Lanham telephone hasn't stopped ringing since news of his release was made public. He's a very popular rider and already has a few clubs interested in signing him.
He won't be out of work long, which is just as well as he earns nothing if he isn't riding, but it's been a frustrating time.
Leigh's season never got started, when he crashed out of the first meeting of the season in March, badly damaging the little finger of his right hand, and breaking a finger on his other.
“I can handle criticism, it doesn't bother me. I've got a lovely wife, Lucy and two beautiful girls Holly (four) and Ellie (three). They are more important to me than anything.
“In some ways a bit of a black cloud has been lifted, I was putting myself under so much pressure. I'd have never quit the Witches, but now I am looking forward to the rest of the season.
“Anyhow I just look at my daughters, they put everything into perspective.”
