Last night Edinburgh Monarchs were rocked by the news of the untimely death of Thomas H Jonasson's father Michael. I am sure that we would all send out sincere condolences to everyone connected to Edinburgh speedway and - in particular - Thomas H Jonasson and all his friends and family. As well as being Thomas H Jonasson's father, Michael Jonasson was also a manager and mentor for the young fellow and his passing will be a devastating blow.

And here is the Edinburgh press release: TRAGEDY MARS A GREAT MONARCHS’ WIN
Monarchs scored a superb 47-41 away win at Redcar tonight, but the success was overshadowed by the tragic news from Sweden that Thomas Jonasson’s dad Michael died tonight.
Thomas received the dreadful news in a post-match phone call from his mother and was naturally distraught, and desperate to return to his family.
Michael Jonasson, who as far as we know was only in his forties, came over to the UK with Thomas when we first met them in January 2008, prior to Thomas agreeing to join Monarchs. He has since made many friends amongst Edinburgh’s officials and fans and loved his trips to Scotland.
He was over for a pre-arranged holiday last weekend and stayed with Monarchs’ Dennis Wallace, watching the team at Armadale and at Newcastle, even though Thomas had been ruled out after his Vetlanda crash the previous Tuesday.
Michael was the guiding force behind Thomas’s career, arranging his contracts and sponsors. He took great pride in his son’s achievements though he did talk last weekend of his concern for Thomas’s health following his crash and his onerous travel programme.
He also often spoke of how much he and Thomas loved being part of the Edinburgh club, and had recently suggested that Thomas may well want to stay with Monarchs after this season even though most would have expected him to go to the Elite League. He greatly valued the personal relationships they had with many of us here.
Thomas was due to ride in an important Under-21 meeting at Eskilstuna on Saturday though at this point we don’t know if he will want to compete, as no doubt his father would have wanted, or whether he will be too upset to ride.
Many of us will be deeply shocked and saddened by what has happened to someone who had become a good friend. We will be pledging every support to Thomas and his family in whatever way we can.Courtesy of: www.monarchs-chatzone.co.uk

Terrible news. My condolences to Thomas, his friends and family, and everyone at Edinburgh, Vetlanda and Gorzow, who would all have had much involvement with Michael.

Very sad news - and puts things into perspective. Condolenses to his family and friends - including any of our friends from Edinburgh who knew him.
All the best Rob

Terrible shame......let's hope Thomas is strong enough to come through this and continue his career in the way Michael clearly wanted.
Condolences to the family, friends and associates.

I asked a question on the Chatzone and it was deleted for being inappropriate. Yet someone else later touched on the same topic later.
Anyway what i said after sending out my condolences and thoughts to the Jonasson family was. Will THJ still want to ride in the U21 this is his last attempt at the title. Now i know we all deal with loss differently and he may not feel upto it but i have only spoke to Thomas once so cant claim to know him. I asked if he is the kind of person to jump on the bike and go out even more determined to win this title in memory of his father or will he pull out to be at home with the family. I dont mean to be at all ignorant with this. Again my thoughts are with the Jonassons.

I cant see why anyone would object to a post like that Snipster, its a valid comment, when Brett Favre was at Green Bay his father died, and he played one of his most memorable games that week dedicated to the memory of his father.

At times, there are things which are more important than speedway. I doubt if the World U21 is the main thing on young Thomas's mind today.

Well i didnt mean to cause offence but i was sent a pm saying it wasnt appropriate at that time and all would become clear in the next few days. Basically meaning check the meeting line up to see if he turns up.
Knowing how much Michael gave to Thomas' speedway career i think we will see THJ at the meeting giving it everything plus more to honour his fathers commitment to his career.

Ofcourse i will respect it Genghis but for his father it was Thomas and his speedway that mattered. As was said on the Chatzone Michael would want Thomas to go and win the title. But it all comes down to how the lad feels
Either way i wish him all the best.

I would guess that the post was removed because it was deemed inappropriate for the thread in question, rather than that it was inappropriate per se. The thread in question seemed to be dedicated to comments expressing sympathy and regrets for the loss of Jonasson's father, rather than the prospects of him racing on Saturday. However, with so many people on the "chatzone" being intimately connected not only with Edinburgh speedway, but also the Jonasson family, I would imagine that emotions are somewhat raw at the moment. Maybe just as well to leave comments as to whether he'll ride or not for other forums. Personally, I'd be surprised if he does ride over the weekend, but that is just my opinion.
