Well I made my first visit to Rye House v IOW last Saturday, thb was pleasantly surprised with the set up there - although as a contest IOW were dreadful . Quite a nice little set up there, thought the track was very tight and too short.. so not too much overtaking. 66-24 kinda reflected that! Great to see the young Guns Tai Woffinden, Tommy Allen and Chris Neath. ;D They surely will not get beaten at home this season! I cannot believe that the reigning Premier Champions have no regular posters in the WWoS... Shame!

Most teams look dreadful at Rye as it's got such a huge home track advantage. I've visited a couple of times and not seen one good meeting. The track is too small, too tight & has an adverse camber which once you go over that's it your race is finished. Despite what people say, the fish & chips are crap too.

Wacks - I think if the attitude of the visiting team is right, then Rye House as a circuit can produce terrific racing. The Oxford Academy went there in 2005 with the right attitude, and despite the absence of three key riders, we won by two points after a last-heat 5-1 from Chris Mills and Craig Branney, simply because our riders were riding with determination but common sense at the same time. The key at Rye House is for the riders not to take too much speed into the corners. It's difficult persuading riders to slow down, as it's totally against their nature as racers, but at Rye, it definitely works. Interestingly enough, that day, as the scorers remained tight, it the Raiders who started to chuck points away and not the visitors. On that day, their own track worked against them - because they were placed under pressure. It remains one of the best meetings I've ever seen, and of all the meetings where I got to work assisting Bryn down the pits, it's the one that gave me the most pleasure. It broke a run of 50 successive home league wins for the Raiders, and ulimately proved the deciding factor in that year's Conference League. EDIT: But, yes, I agree, the Fish and chips are crap.

with respect Genghis, even in 2005 Millsy & Branney weren't your run of the mill CL riders were they, both had had fairly extensive PL experience by then so should have had the beating of most CL riders on any track. I take your point though and guess the same could be said of most tracks with big home track advantages. I was down in Devon on business on a Mondaya few years back & went along to watch Rye at the County Ground. I think Exeter just failed to hit 70 that night , and yet I saw some excellent meetings down there between the Falcons & Racers over the years. The Country Ground was definately a track which you had to attack, and could produce some brilliant racing. Most away riders who visited there though took one look at it, shit their pants and were lucky if the came awat with 5 or 6 points. ;D

But, yes, it's all about the attitude of the visiting team. Watching an Oxford team containing both Mick Poole and Martin Goodwin at Exeter was an absolute pleasure - they were brilliant around there and really attacked it, I think Burt (Martin Goodwin) scared most of the home riders around there. On the other hand, I still have nightmares about Mikael Teurnberg poterring around the inside line at Exeter and nearly being lapped.

The fish & chips are crap, i agree despite what sub would have us believe, fish and chips at its best is pretty crap. i would like it noted,i nominated coventry as wooden spoonists before rory got injured. hope rory is ok,a broken scaphoid(if thats the problem) takes mere mortals 8/9 weeks to heal,so expect to see a speedway rider back in 4.

We had 1 really good night at Rye House last season, but as expected, that was the night I wasn't there. I've been there every time before, and after that, and we have been well and truely trouced there. Certainly a trick track - and the home riders know it so well. If you go over that camber on the 2nd bend there, you're shall we say - screwed.
