Could this be the last race we'll see at Magny Cours? Last year it was won by the legend that is Michael Schumacher (I'm sure that won't be wasted on Rob) with Alonso in second place. This year there's a new kid on the block and he's increasingly impressing me, despite the car he's in.
So, in what's effectively a two horse race for the win which of the two McLaren's will it be? They both appear to have kissed and made up after the rumours of a rift within the team, but will no doubt be looking to stamp their authority on the race.
Names to watch out for: Heidfeld, Wurz and Webber, with the Brits hardly getting a mention.
Qualifying starts at 1pm on Saturday and, amazingly, ITV have opted to show this one, so it's an afternoon in front of the tele for that and Cardiff, hopefully joined by my favourite man (and I don't mean Nicki P.) Looking forward to the weekend.

Rain was expected during the qualifying session, but never came, though it's predicted as a 60% chance for the race tomorrow which could make things very interesting. I haven't seen Lewis race in the wet and I'm not entirely sure about the rules regarding tyres - if they have a hard and soft compound for wets that they have to use.
Strong rumours around that Toyota won't be renewing Ralf's contract. His team mate has consistently finished in the top 10 whereas Ralf has consistently not. The French were hoping he'd be given the boot here and now so they could see home driver Franck Montagny in the car, but that was largely wishful thinking. Still, he's out of the top 10 again, so doesn't seem too bothered. I guess he's hoping his name will carry favour with another team.
Engine troubles for Alonso put him down in tenth place. If he has to change it he'll incur a further penalty. Nice to see those red cars back up at the top where they belong.
Qualifying result:
1. Massa 2. Hamilton 3. Raikkonen 4. Kubica 5. Fisichella 6. Kovalainen 7. Heidfeld 8. Trulli

A disaster for McLaren. I reckon the Woking wonders will change Alonso's engine - the sensible thing to do. Alonso's race is just as fucked if he's 10th or 20th. But what's going on with Stepney at Ferrari?

But what's going on with Stepney at Ferrari? From what I gather they are accusing him of some unknown crime against the team, disappearing without telling them, and not answering his calls. He claims he was on a holiday booked by the team at Ferrari, so they knew exactly where he was.

Will be interesting to see if Mr Personality Bypass decides to go for it, or just sit back and see if Hamilton and Massa take each other out.

Just had a radical thought. Do you think Ralf is hoping big bro will be able to secure him a drive for Ferrari next year? One last chance to prove himself? I know they don't see eye-to-eye on many things, but with Kimi clearly not impressing his bosses it's a possibility, surely?

That is a radical thought, but I can't see it somehow; unless something dramatic happens to Raikkkkkkky's season, he'll be looking for a new seat next year for sure, but I can't imagine Ralf replacing him. I know he's never had the classiest car to drive, but it's certainly never looked like his talent was better than his equipment.

I'm not sure what Alonso's deal is at McLaren, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him at Maranello (sp?) next season. All the best Rob

With 23 laps to go, looks like a Ferrari 1-2, and a win for Kimi Raikkkkonnnen.
Is this the start of a Ferrari and Raikononenen comeback???
All the best Rob

And two laps later I turned it off. What a boring race, apart from Albers leaving his pit before he was told and taking the fuel rig along the pit exit lane. Not even a drop of the rain that looked likely and could have made things interesting. Result from www.planetf1.com01 K. Räikkönen Ferrari 1:18:00.188 02 F. Massa Ferrari + 2.004 03 L. Schumi,
I didn't think it was that dull. For the first time in an absolute age, we had two Ferraris actually geniuely being allowed to race each other for the lead of a GP.
I'm trying to work out the last this happened, but I can't think of the last ocassion.
All the best Rob

When were the Ferraris actually racing Rob?
AFAIR, Kimi never tried to beat Massa on the track, he passed him in the pits; Hamilton suffered from a bad strategy from his team, and did the best thing and went for consistancy.
As a result, Lewis is still heading the WC table, and, if he carries on that way, he will take the title at the end of the year.

Rob The first couple of laps saw a few incidents, but I didn't see any actual racing. I thought you hated it when the Ferraris overtook in the pits? Doesn't constitute a "proper" overtaking manouevre, does it? I've kept the table updated, but was surprised that was Honda's first point. They seem to be taking a step backwards each season and it's doing Jenson no favours whatsoever.
